Most terrifying central performance on film?

Many contenders of course, and I'm sure that after some reflection, this won't turn out to be my ultimate one, but I've just watched it and it was startling (in no small part due to its incongruity, the film not being a horror or thriller type film - so never any real tension) - Robert Duvall in 'The Apostle'. Masterful stuff, backed up with an equally terrifying depiction of old-style devout Pentecostalism.

And Miranda Richardson aka the second-greatest current screen actress, is in it for a bit

I still reckon Robert Mitchum in Night of the Hunter.

Miranda Richardson is very scary in "The Crying Game" ;

when she says "Keep the faith", you know the "or else" is understood.

And Xavier Bardem is about as cold as they come in NCFOM.

TOTALLY agree with you re Bardem. Although I HATED the film the first time I saw it in the cinema, I watched it again on DVD over Xmas and kinda warmed to it. My only crit is TLJ has WAYY too many lines!

In reply to Blue Straggler: You'll probably tear me to shreds, but Ben Whishaw in Perfume was 'terrifying' in a rather amoral alien way.

Apart from that, the Belgian/French (?) guy in The Vanishing (original version) was coldly and implacably evil. Or Michael Rooker in Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer.

Oh, and the shark in Jaws was pretty scary
 andrew ogilvie 31 Jan 2009
In reply to Blue Straggler: Not sure that terrifying is the right description but surely Robert de Niro as the wonderfully alienated Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver deserves a mention here.

The Apostle sounds interesting though.

I agree; for some reason his Max Cady is scarier than De Niro's.

Good call. That scene when he was in the bathroom talking to himself about 'Jacqui the Paki' etc was a bit worrying.

In reply to Steve Parker: I'd still go for Max Shreck in 'Nosferatu'.
 Steve Parker 31 Jan 2009
In reply to Al Evans:

Well it was a class act, but I don't think it was very terrifying. Pretty camp and theatrical etc. Then again, he pretty much WAS that character anyway, wasn't he, so that's a bit scary.

Brian Cox was much more believable and thus more scary. I thought AH was too theatrical.

Bob Mitchum in Night of the Hunter gets my vote, along with Ray Winston in The War Zone.

Also, Klaus Kinski playing a remorseless bounty hunter in an utterly bleak western, shot mostly in the snow. I can't remeber the name. i thought it was The Big Silence, but can't find any ref to it on that name. Any ideas anyone?

Aleksei Kravchenko as the young protagonist in "Come and See".

I've been rewatching it on the last few days, and while at the beginning is just "good", by the end it's an absolutely fearsome screen presence. Both sad and terrifying.

McShane is WAY scarier but his is not a central performance (though I accept that the definition is subjective!)

Thanks, I'd neber heard of this, it sounds great! Sergio "Django" Corbucci directing, and it has Trintignant and Frank Wolff (Brett McBain from Once Upon A Time in the West) in it. And Vonetta "The Eiger Sanction" McGee! Bargain

In reply to Blue Straggler:

If you like slightly unconventional westerns, as I do, try El Topo. It is exceptionally weird, but great.

Vonetta McGee trivia: she was in Repo Man too, one of my favourite ever films. Back on thread, Agent Rodgerz was pretty scary.

I've never really understood this, or why people find Joe Pesci so frightening in Casino and the like. If someone behaved like that who's short, physically weedy and extremely irritating with a knack of getting everyone into trouble but who supposedly hangs around with seasoned murderers all day, surely they'd be lucky to see the end of their first morning on the job?
 Tom Valentine 03 Feb 2009
In reply to niggle:

I agree; whenever I watch Stella Street I don't find Joe P. at all scary.
Two very different parts but Robert Carlyle in Trainspotting and Kevin Bacon in The Woodsman both gave me the shivers.
