A Fresh New Climb...

Big changes from the September issue... CLIMB has a brighter, fresher look, unveiling a new masthead, cover design and layout. The paper has changed to a modern uncoated finish, benefiting from being more environmentally-friendly and easier on the eye.

We have resisted the pattern of other titles to revert to the standard A4 size, believing big is beautiful. Keeping an oversize format ensures the unsurpassed photography is displayed to its finest.

The September issue also includes a gatefold centre-spread poster for readers to pull out and keep. Double-sided, the poster has a massive panorama on one side and four individual images on the reverse. More stunning pull-out posters will feature in future issues.

Pick up your copy of the September issue (officially on sale this Thursday), from all major newsagents, specialist outdoor retailers, climbing walls & Tesco superstores.

As ever, we are really keen to know what you think about the new look so please

Got mine today, love the content as always but really don't like the new paper i think the old paper makes the photo's look much better.

Got mine yesterday too, at first I was a little unsure,
paper has a nicer feel to it, but the more I look at it the better it gets, good content as usual and really like the new look, good effort IMO.

I like the new size, it feels slightly unusual to have an uncoated stock but the pictures seem bright with no detail lost. That being said, the overall design feels slightly 'darker' than previous issues with what feels like more subdued article backgrounds as part of the layout - not sure if this is to balance the colour of the paper stock or just a new design choice.

The content is excellent as always and the differences are just changes, not detractions - it's certainly not going to deter me from purchasing future copies.

I see from the image of the cover that you are retaining the tradition of cover pics that are nearly always close-up shots taken from just above a climber (with superimposed, ugly straplines). Do you not realise how boring, boring, boring, boring, boring this is?

I stopped reading your magazine -- previously I used to pick it up at the newsagents regularly -- but nowadays the covers look so boring, samey and ugly that they don't entice.

In reply to Climb Magazine: to be totally honest i'm slightly jarred off with seeing the same ol climbers in there every month some of whom i know and its quite annoying when there are LOTS OF OTHER CLIMBERS out there doing much more impressive stuff at whatever grade that never get a look in because the people who keep appearing in almost EVERY issue is a friend of the photographer or some other shite like that ...... lets make it a tad more diverse.... or is that above what the mag can offer?

In reply to Climb Magazine: Have to admit i dont like the new horrible local governmant handout look of the mag, why am i paying 3.50 for a piece of recycled toilet roll!! Got it yesterday and needless to say it rained and within 5 seconds the mag disintegrated so that went in the bin and it was of to get climber which is slightly more durable and frankly a better read at the present time.

In reply to Climb Magazine: Got this yesterday.

Great! I liked the paper, and I think this environmentally friendly aspect is very important. And the pull out in the middle - very nice.

Also thought the content was bloody good and the Tremadog piece very inspiring.

Nice work Climb team.

I thought it was really good: great redesign, good cover shot, good articles.

As for people complaining about the lack of variety of people photos: no one makes a living just taking climbing photos, so climbing photos do tend to feature more of the photographers' friends (since that's who they go climbing with) and top climbers (since they're on photo incentive deals and are more willing to climb routes for photos).

In my experience most people just want to go climbing, not have a photographer on a rope next to them as they do the crux moves, or repeat a climb just because the light is getting good.

I've advertised on here for climbing models in the past - as have other photographers. But you often run into problems: peoples' jobs aren't that suited to taking days off midweek to get shots when the weather's good / people don't want their weekends movements dicated by a photographer.

no real answer - apart from take more photos yourself I guess. And, anyway, your average phone will soon have more MP than a D3, so everyone will be able to take great shots!

You can get environmentally friendly paper but coated (like Rock+Ice), which would be a lot better for the pictures. The images printed on this new stock loose vibrancy, and it feel cheap overall. As for the design, I preferred the old one, it was more structured and easy to read. The graphic structure of the articles need more work, I think they messed too much with the layout and it's hard to read.

The content is always great, but I feel the new design lets down the content.

In reply to Jack Geldard - Editor - UKC: But you would say that, wouldn't you since income from Climb pays your wage! Rather a transparent comment in my opinion.
It seems better than that previous version, but I did think it was some sort of supplement to beggin with. I don't thnk the content is "bloody good", but it's not awful. The pull out in the middle is OK, but they should be using those pictures on the front instead of the crappy close ups they nearly always go for. The Birkett immage is years old and out of date. Anyway, Climb is better than Climber this month, though, and the front covers are virtually identical!

In reply to Climb Magazine:

Next month (October) issue will definitely dispel any residual doubt you may have about the awesomeness of Climb Magazine! Believe me!
