Hello

I'm looking for book recommendations. I want to find out about:

(1) Explanations of how the landforms of the highlands were created. I'd particularly like to see maps showing estimated ice coverage through time.
(2) Climate change since the last ice age and how this has affected the land, forestation, deforestation etc.
(3) Human settlement of Scotland following the retreat of the ice sheets.

My goal is to build up a picture of how different the Scotland we see today is from the Scotland experienced by the peoples of the past.

Cheers
Gavin
In reply to the real dr gav: Hostile Habitats is a good one.

In reply to the real dr gav: Most of the books & references I have are now a bit dated & I doubt if you'd find them outside a university library. Glancing at my shelves the following are fairly recent

Nature of the Cairngorms (Shaw & Thompson) - first couple of chapters give a introduction but limited to the Cairngorms

Managing Scotland's Environment (Warren) - especially the first few chapters

For history of forests see almost any of the recent books by Chris Smout on forest/woodland history

While searching for the title of my favourite (now out of print) book on geology & landscape I came across this which sounds good
Geology and Landscapes of Scotland (Con Gillen) while
McKirdy, Alan Gordon, John & Crofts, Roger (2007) Land of Mountain and Flood: The Geology and Landforms of Scotland. is by some colleagues

Just finished reading this book Huttons Arse by Malcolm Rider http://www.huttonsarse.com it has some info on climate change in one of the chapters, but is mainly focused on geology. Very ease to read and gives a fasanating introduction to geology in general.

Also worth it just for the title!

Highland Geology Trail is a good one
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Highland-Geology-Trail-John-Roberts/dp/0946487367

so is Geology and Landscapes of Scotland
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Geology-Landscapes-Scotland-Con-Gillen/dp/190354409...

and Land of Mountain and Flood
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Land-Mountain-Flood-Landforms-Scotland/dp/184158626...

For the human side of stuff, there are so many good local books, just have a look through http://birlinn.co.uk/ and http://www.luath.co.uk/ and you will find plenty of reading

In reply to Doug: Curiosity got the better of me, have now tracked down what was my favourite introduction to geology, scenery and landscape -
Geology and Scenery in Scotland by JB Whittow which was published as a paperback by Pelican or Penguin in the late 70s.

No idea if its still available but worth searching out although no doubt now a little dated

This is a very useful link to a map showing a variety of glacial features.
