Dave Gater - Dyno Screen Shot, 4 kbBritish climber Dave Gater is on a European bouldering tour. Dave specialises in dynos and he has made a string of nifty first ascents on his tour so far.

"I don't think I have ever seen anyone more naturally talented at the one move wonder than him..."

In reply to UKC News: You know the dynos are big when the video screen is stretched to accommodate the dyno.

Is this climbing?
In reply to Henry Loveless:

Certainly not one of the most extreme aspects of climbing....

no .
In reply to Henry Loveless:

It's natural progression Alpine --> Climbing --> Bouldering --> One move dyno

Next will be "no hand dyno heal hook".
Did anyone else notice the reaaaally crap view on the last video.. That could have been the worlds easiest dyno, and the filming wouldnt show any different... -.-''

Funny how something can be impressive and laughable at the same time

In reply to UKC News: It is a bit odd, i love flinging myself around but i wouldn't class it as it's own branch of climbing, any more than i would finger-locking. What Skyler says about the lack of ropes, i think he's confused dynoing with bouldering in general, there are a fair few routes incorporating dynos in the world.

i imagine basketball players with standing vertical jumps over 40 inches... add the use of hand holds, being allowed to use intermediate footholds to gain more height, their freakish height and long arms would crush some of these one move dyno to a jug routes/competitions.
 mark s 25 Aug 2010
In reply to valjean: don't talk such crap.the dyno's skyler does are generally big holds to big holds, rely on his height.but the real hard dynos out there require some serious strength.have a look at catapult at kyloe.
valjean 25 Aug 2010
In reply to mark s:
no mate im not talking rubbish, its basically a simple observation of physical statures and moves that suit those body types.... im pretty sure an athlete that has a standing vertical jump between 40-50 inches would be able to get some of these dynos in a couple of goes. it doesnt mean they can climb, it just means they can do this one move.

if i had the ability to touch lets say 12 1/2 feet straight up from a standing position, im pretty sure id be having a go at one move dynos to a jug... but that doesnt mean id be able to climb lower grade climbs that required different moves.
 thommi 25 Aug 2010
In reply to mark s: he did say jugs dude.

In reply to UKC News: Notice his little mittens?! I fear World Record status has inflated his idea of being unarguably good at one technique. He is very good, but seems to pale in impressiveness(?) to Dave Gater with his cheeky extra foot pop dyno. Maybe because it's real rock, FA or the lack of ego (he may well behave identically but the video is purely climbing) before seeing the goods?

Don't know about you folk but I feel at my safest when bouldering above mats.

In reply to UKC News: I find it really retarded that this guy Skyler actually believes that dynoing is firstly a sport within the climbing community and secondly that it is the most extreme aspect of climbing, has he never heard of trad or big wall?! Whilst dynoing is fun it really doesnt show raw talent or skill, just how far someone can jump and their ability to hold on when your shoulder wants to pop out of its socket. Impressive moves, i like a dyno as much as anyone but i think its arrogant and short-sighted of Skyler to say the things he said.

In reply to JK Fox:
dyno on a solo on a big wall doing it alpine style on some unclimbed himalayan peak in winter.... into a dirty shallow mono pocket. that would be cutting edge, probably gets you a piolet. im sure you guys can think of ways to make it harder.

Yeah, get him on some some VSs at Stanage and then he'll know all about Extreme!
 Tom Peckitt 25 Aug 2010
Indoor and outdoor dynos are incomparable. It seems to me that the indoor dyno comp is perfecting one technique, whereas for outdoor dynos you have to use a multitude of skills: strength, agility and (I reckon) most importantly technique. It's not just about jumping as far as you can. Tiny foot adjustments, balance, knowing how and where to catch the holds, coordinating your feet running up the wall, all make the hard outdoor dyno an impressive aspect climbing. It doesn't fall into it's own genre but this doesn't mean it's not worthwhile. I would disagree that an athelete like a basketball player could do a hard outdoor dyno as climbing skills and techniques are needed but they could stand a good chance of jumping far in and indoor dyno comp.
I reckon Dave's ascents are impressive and these are just acouple of examples of dynos he has put up over europe in the last few months (as well as crushing boulder problems upto and including 8a).
I totally agree the Skyler vid is naff and the thought process a bit confused. You certainly can't call what he does the most extreme and impressive facet of climbing!

Check out the fall. This definitely deserves an E number, and not a small one, given that the harder you try the harder you fall.

looks better than i had imagined as it looked from the first vid that he would land closer to the camera on the green downward sloping boulder as the camera is zoomed in a bit

In reply to UKC News: came 2nd in a dyno competition the other day at the local wall, was a really fun night... I wouldn't call it climbing though, just how fast you can uncoil. And that czech czuck problem is unreal, looks like he just floats up there
 Dan Goodwin 26 Aug 2010
In reply to gritstoner:

Impressive indeed !

But I dont think it deserves an E number, its a V number surely as it wouldn't be high enough for a route !

Aye
