There will be many, I know, but for me 2 stand out.

The first is a song:

"a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest"

The second is a book:

"a man lives his life as a carpenter, whose work goes so slowly for the bluntness of his tools that he has not the time to sharpen them" (possibly not a direct quote)

Jonathan Richman, Summer Feeling. Pretty much the whole song but one line stands out

"Do you long for her or the way you were."

Every war results from the struggle for markets and spheres of influence, and every war is sold to the public by professional liars and totally sincere religious maniacs, as a Holy Crusade to save God and Goodness from Satan and Evil. Robert Anton Wilson

Hard to the core, I feel the floor
When I'm on the stage, yo, yo'll ask for more
I'm on the ass, I know the last
I work real hard do you like my cash
Tick tick ticka tick take your time
When I'm goin' I'm goin' for mine
Open you ears and you will hear it
I tell you this 'cause there's no limit!

[A:] No no, no no no no, no no no no, no no there's no limit!
No no, no no no no, no no no no, no no there's no limit!

[A:] No no limits, we'll reach for the sky!
No valley to deep, no mountain to high
No no limits, won't give up the fight
We do what we want and we do it with pride

In reply to Glyno:

Hmm, food for thought, but try these for size.

Ten to doomsday, moving fast...
Heads up! Mind that blast.
No time to sleep, it's Def.Con.One.
Can't get no sleep as the ticking ticks on,
No time for fear, it's Def.Con.One,
No time to eat but get me some

Big Mac, fries to go...
Big Mac, fries to go...
Get me Big Mac, fries to go...
Get me Big Mac, get me fries to go...

Pop Will Eat Itself, Def Con One

or maybe...?

I will not fail nor falter, I shall succeed
My perception is altered, I do believe
Faith is so strong now nothing shall bar my way
Firm conviction is no fiction
This is my day

I can move move move any mountain
I can move move move any mountain
I can move move move any mountain

I'm not missing out on the promise of adventure
I'm not giving up on implausible dreams

"God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an ineffable game of his own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players, to being involved in an obscure and complex version of poker in a pitch dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time."

A seasoned witch could call you from the depths of your disgrace,
And rearrange your liver to the solid mental grace,
And achieve it all with music that came quickly from afar,
Then taste the fruit of man recorded losing all against the hour.
And assessing points to nowhere, leading ev'ry single one,
A dewdrop can exalt us like the music of the sun,
And take away the plain in which we move
And choose the course you're running.

That is quite hard.....

Either this....

I'm here for the sinking of all I know/and I was there for the launching in the harbour/it was me that let me lever go/it was looking at there from here that got me thinking/it's why I don't believe in believing/
it's an irreversible slide/you might as well enjoy the ride/you're going to get sick when nothing's pure/unless you find your own cure

Or this.....

To fall in love and fall in debt
To alcohol and cigarettes and Mary Jane
To keep me insane, doing someone else's cocaine
And there's nothing wrong with me
This is how I'm supposed to be
In a land of make believe
That don't believe in me

Like the holy scriptures of a shopping mall
And so it seemed to confess
It didn't say much
But it only confirmed that
The center of the earth
Is the end of the world
And I could really care less

That would have been mine too, what a wonderful voice.

Instead i'll have David brent's pick -

"Life is just a series of peaks and troughs. And you don't know whether
you're in a trough until you're climbing out, or on a peak until you're
coming down. And that's it you know, you never know what's round the
corner. But it's all good. 'If you want the rainbow, you've gotta put
up with the rain.' Do you know which "philosopher" said that? Dolly
Parton. And people say she's just a big pair of tits."
