Do coffe table books such as 'Cold Climbs' and 'All Fourteen Eight Thousanders' still get bought by mountaineers?
 Morgan Woods 15 Feb 2011
In reply to Iwan:

Over the past few years I have bought:

- The World's Best Free Climber by Heinz Zack
- Parios de Legende by Arnaud Petit
& L'Alpinisme by ENSA

so yes i think they still have their place, although the last 2 are stretching the definition of coffee table book since they are about A4 size and more like technical manuals/topos.

In reply to Iwan: I don't buy mountaineering books - I'd rather do it than read about it. However, we do have books on our coffee table. Currently we have the art of the hot rod by ken gross and Hubble, window on the universe by giles sparrow.

Not many, several out of print ones, and some written but not printed due to cost and them going out of fashion.

New Extreme rock, how many would buy it, and how much would you be willing to pay for it?

In reply to Graeme Alderson:

Worth coming out of retirement to plug this. A wonderful book.

Also available in the UK: http://www.cordee.co.uk/CND031.php

In reply to duncan: I couldn't find it on the Cordee site so thanks for the link.

At least they waited a decent period of time (10 years) before blatantly nicking the idea from Sienfeld: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmo_Kramer#Coffee_Table_Book_about_Coffee_Ta...

I just got "Classic Rock"
(http://www.amazon.co.uk/Classic-Rock-Great-British-Climbs/dp/1898573700/ref... for my birthday and it is great! I wouldn't think of buying for myself but it is a great present and really interesting book with amazing pictures.

I call them 'bog-books' myself. I'm buying Alps ones at the moment for inspiration ready for 2 alps trips this year. I have every one of the Viz annuals which make fantastic 'bog-books'I got Extreme rock and Ice climbs of the world for 3 quid brand new in summer, that was my last proper coffee table book.

Go back and read the book title again!

I'd be shouting from the rooftop if I got Extreme rock for 3 nicker!
 NorthernGrit 16 Feb 2011
In reply to blanchie14c:

Ah right, sorry, my mistake. That would've been a bit of a bargain wouldn't it?
 wilkie14c 16 Feb 2011
In reply to NorthernGrit:
It'd be on ebay for 300 before I'd even read in the inroduction....
 Jim Walton 16 Feb 2011
In reply to Iwan: I think I've managed to build a collection of coffee table books for less than you would pay for Extreme Rock.

The 4 Bill Birkett Classic Rock Climbs Books
The 4 Ken Wilson Rock Books
Cold Climbs
Extreme Alpine Rock
Himalya Alpine Style
Top Climbs of the World
Limestone - 100 best routes
The Cullin
Great Climbs
Himalayan Climber - DS
High Mountains of the Alps
Mountaineer - CB
Blessed Everest (A freebie)
The Alps and Alpinism

At some point I'll buy Grandes Courses by Labande.

They are all inspiational (except for Blessed Everest).
