In reply to wildirishman: Try the OMM 25 mate, cracking sack. I'm 6'3" and it works perfect!

In reply to wildirishman:

OMM sack, perfect for the job. Which size depends on how high or low tech your gear is. So check you can get everything in, a 25l should do the trick.

I like the Inov8 bag.

Very light. Slightly strange build, a zip all the way up the middle, so no hole in the top. But works for me.

Hi mate,
I haven't done a mountain marathon before, but I used an older version of the Raidlight rucksack below on the Marathon Des Sables:

I'm 6ft 3, broad shouldered and about 110 kilos and did me fine. Loads of the chaps on the race had the same make just different set ups.

Enjoy your marathon!

Another vote for OMM rucksacks. I use the Adventure 20L. I started out with an OMM 32l which was also good and has a longer back.

One of my team mates used an Inov 8 race pro 20. which he liked.

I think OMM rucksacks may not be the very lightest but they are tried and tested.

All the very best with your Mountain Marathon.

another vote for the innov8 race elite 25.

dont worry about the zip, had mine 2 years now and not a single problem after a lot of abuse.
In reply to wildirishman: I've got a 20l Terra Nova Elite pack for sale if you are interested? Send me an email.

Never used:

Should be perfect for mountain marathons.

Cheers

Thank you all for your advice, will start trying them.

Are any of these waterproof? If not, what do runners use to make them so?

No

I use a kitchen bin liner (it's only got to stay waterproof for 1 day). My partner uses Alpkit drybags. http://www.alpkit.com/shop/cart.php?target=product&product_id=16316&...

In reply to wildirishman: I currently have an old-KIMM sack which is similar in style to the OMM ones, however I'm not a fan of the thick straps on them and the way its designed rubs my neck, so am looking for an alternative...

So far the Osprey Hornet looks good but expensive! Does anyone know of any other contenders? Tried the Inov-8 but similar problem with straps.

P.S. sorry for thread hijack...

In reply to ablackett: Just to let you know that I bought this bag and have run a good bit with it, feels great, thanks for the advice.

In reply to Ali: Had the same with my OMM sack, rubbed neck and arm. I bought some really silky Lycra from a fabric shop and fashioned covers for the straps. Works an absolute dream and much cheaper than a new sack!
