Our department in school are looking to purchase a new SLR for taking photos in and around the department. Is it possible for photos to be wirelessly sent automatically to our school network without the hassle of transferring from datacards etc?

Yes, I understand there are "Eye-fi" wireless SD cards.

That'd be one of these (at least for Canon DSLR), but not cheap for the convenience.
