The mrs and I just filmed a first ascent we did a couple of weeks ago up on the far north coast, unfortunately the memory card filled on her compact camera before she seconded (because I took so long!)
It's quite weird watching yourself climb as I felt it took no time at all yet the video time shows it not to be the case. I suppose time passes differently under such concentration or being gripped etc.

How many people have videos of themselves climbing posted on Youtube or just on their computer and did watching yourself back enlighten you to anything regarding your climbing?

8min is indeed very quick for a trad route, but slowww to watch back :P

That's the hard thing about filming climbing esp trad.

I thought I had a good video sorted when I raced up Stingray as fast as possible for the camera - very aesthetic route, cool moves and great filming position.

I lead it in 10min by placing less gear and rushing the moves, and the vid is still too boring to upload!

In terms of self assessment I do find it quite interesting to watch, but probably not that effective for self coaching. I enjoy watching videos of myself when I started, to see the change in my climbing.

It's interesting to stop start the frames and catch some of the instinctive decisions that you don't even realise you're making, such as readjusting a hand or foot mid move.

This is mine.

I was shocked at my missing the crux hold by two fingers, and readjusting. I didn't even realise till afterwards.

Thanks! I really enjoyed the route. Cheddar's short routes are under rated!

I've tried an animated gif aswell - seems to highlight the body position/shape.

Really good to watch this. I need to lose weight (and do some serious training). I might be able to do an E1 then

In reply to Phil Layton: Making a video must have some advantages then?

More useful instruction on technique for me. Thanks.

It's used alot in other sports (eg golf)to improve performance and it's very cheap and available to most these days. I've just decided to get someone to video me as a way of assessing my technique and body position.

So yes, it's a cool thing to do.

Then again, I usually have the awareness to know how well I'm climbing, when I'm struggling, when I'm graceful and flowing, when I've cocked up and need to change feet, when I'm off balance, when I'm being efficient, and when I'm being plain clumsy. But it's still fun to be imortalised, which, if you post on the web, is kind of what you become.

a bit of editing will help (at least with cutting out the abseil/ though keep the kiss it's a nice touch, although i'm not sure my belayer would be so keen). windows movie maker is pretty easy to use.

the problem with doing your own video is that it is difficult to capture it from different angles unless you have multiple cameras or climb it over and over. without different angles, close ups and alike it is difficult to make the video interesting. even if the climb looks really cool (which this one does).

i've found that rather than having just one climb in a video cutting a few together (maybe from different climbers) you can get a better watch.

it looks like a really good climb, what grade does it go for?

In reply to mataius: Thanks for the constructive criticism and advice. We decided on VS 4c** though it looks harder on first viewing.
