Hey does Stoke on Trent need a mountaineering club or is there one up and running that I cant find?
If there isn't i would love to get one going if people are up for it.
Any ideas ?

I'm an associate member of the Keele club. It gets me cheaper access to their excellent Bendcrete wall and it can be a laugh trying to keep up with the kidz.

I'm not aware of any other besides the Staffs uni club but that is a closed club.

What are your preliminary thoughts for starting a club? I think I may be interested.
In reply to timNixon: I'd be interested. Would be beneficial for meeting more partners to socialise and liftshare with.

In reply to EZ: I was part of the Staffs uni club, its just after uni there seems to be nothing, starting thoughts was just having a meeting a month, no fee's unless it becomes a big thing then we need to start thinking BMC membership etc but even then so it will just be that, its just an excuss for people that love the outdoors to come together to know each other and take it from there.

In reply to timNixon:

We should meet up and get out if nothing else.

I'm hoping for an afternoon or two next week and maybe a day at the weekend. If you're interested then send me a mail.

DKB, give me a kick as well if you fancy anything next week. Maybe Wales for the day at the weekend?

Any more stoke climbers wanting to start getting [out] together?

Correct me if i`m wrong but isn`t there a "Staffordshire mountaineering club" ?

I think they own the hut in Cwm Cywarch called Bryn Hafod.

In reply to johnnorman:

If it did once it isn't affiliated to the BMC and doesn't have a web presence.

In reply to timNixon:

There is a club based in Stoke called The Five Towns Mountaineers.

Mr J Kelsall, 2 Caldew Grove New Park Trentham Stoke on Trent, ST4 8UY

You might also try South Cheshire CC based in Crewe

South Cheshire Climbing Club
Main Club Contact - Ms M Hookway

Website: www.scheshireclimbing.org.uk

I was associated with both when I lived in Nantwich.

There is also a congleton club

Facebook: CongletonMountaineeringClub

Alternatively, during the winter months on a Tuesday night after 945pm we can be found at the Beartown Tap pub in Congleton or the White Lion Inn in Barthomley near Alsager

Hope you get some success from these leads

In reply to timNixon: Depending on what side of Stoke you live on, there is also the Buxton MC, which is BMC affiliated. http://www.buxtonmc.co.uk/ Meets on Tuesday nights around the Peak and weekends aways.

In reply to tim Nixon: Hi Tim, there is The Mountain Club, Stafford. Our website is currently down but we have a Facebook group with over 50 members who are into a wide variety of activities but who share Mountain skills and activities and there is a rock climbing focus - yes we are the ones with Bryn Hafod Hut.
If you join the FB group there is a tab for files with a meets list and a weds. pm meets list for indoor and outdoor but it is best to check via FB if others are going due to weather, work etc.
there are also pictures from past events etc to show some of what we get up to.

best time to meet more people is on 1st thursday in month at the Greyhound pub, near Stafford Prison from 9 pm as there is a committee meeting then - lots of us on committee are older but there are all ages from babies and every age in between as the club has a long history so don't be fooled by our wrinkles (well mine anyway)we do get up to a lot and know how to have fun! Please get incontact if you can Kirsty

In reply to kirsty52: Good to hear that MCS is still going strong. Bryn Hafod is a wonderful hut in a rather novel location and I always enjoyed staying there when I lived down south.

Stoke needs a lot more than just a climbing club!
 EZ 16 Jun 2012
In reply to kirsty52:

Thanks Kirsty. I have been toying with the idea of shifting my locale of affiliation over the next year or so as I moved to near Doveridge and even though I work in Stoke Keele is no longer the closest club to me (although I truly do love their wall). Skyline is also an option for me at Burton. But I've got plenty of time to make moves toward meeting people and introducing myself as I want to maintain my Keele affiliation this academic year coming because of a couple of the members.
I'll look forward to stumbling across your website when it does come back. I personally don't and won't use facebook.
Regards

In reply to EZ:

I'd be interested in a club in Stoke. The clubs suggested on the thread so far are all a good 20-30 minutes' drive which isn't good if you don't have transport or, like me, you work early in the mornings.

Who else is interested in getting together?
 WJV0912 16 Jun 2012
In reply to timNixon:

You know I'm interested Tim Also if anyone here is looking for climbing partners around Congleton, give me a bell!

In reply to mcdougal:

How's about we pick a pub that is acceptable to start with...?

Shout up people. If you're in Stoke and you fancy trying to get a club together or at least meeting a few like minded people with a view to gaining more partnerships/friends then lets come up with some momentum!

Hanley, Stoke, Newcastle, Longton near to Awesome Walls? How many reading this are actually interested in meeting up?

Have you got a suggestion for a pub? What day suits you for meeting up? What would you like to do as a club?

Personally I can travel to anywhere as I live out of Stoke now but I think a quieter pub would be worth considering so that we can have a worthwhile conversation.

Thoughts??

In reply to EZ:

Location: Doesn't matter to me.

Day: In the week preferably. Any evening (I have work at 21:00 so can't be late obviously)

Thoughts for a club: (From reading other clubs' web sites recently whilst looking round for affiliation options) To have a wall (summertime: local crag) evening. To meet up once a month maybe for a local crag meet. If we became enough people, to look for a Wales/Lakes/Scotland holiday weekend/week every now and then.

In reply to EZ:

A pub near AW Stoke is a good idea in theory. Finding one that isn't populated by the cast of "May Un Mar Lady" not so easy! Corner Pin on Anchor Road used to be ok(ish) but haven't been there for C.10 years so may even have closed.
Any other ideas anyone?
 EZ 16 Jun 2012
In reply to mcdougal:

I'll drop in over the next day or so and have a look.

More ideas?
