Hi. I m going Chamonix for the first time this summer. Any suggestions for campsites. I ve got a camper van and would prefer good facilities and pleasant surroundings. Also my French is nt brilliant. Cheers folks.
In reply to Crag Pony: The Argentier campsite is the standard place for brits on climbing trips. Julian the owner is english and the facilities are pretty good. The Wednesday pizza van usually a highlight. The website is http://www.campingchamonix.com/
Camping Les Drus comes recommended, but I've never stayed there.
In reply to Crag Pony: Argentiere as said elsewhere is the place most Brits go, but its downsides are that it is on a slope, is full of Brits and is a bit out of the way if you need to head to the hills from Cham. My personal favourite is Camping Les Barrats. It is a bit more expensive, but sports an covered outdoor cooking area and excellent facilities. The pitches are also a bit more private.

I have been going to this site for years. Facilities are pretty good and you are a short walk to the centre of Chamonix, Lac Gallands, Agille du Midi cable car and pubs. Helicopters landing at the hospital opposite can be a bit noisy at times though.
In reply to Crag Pony: Another vote for Les Arrolles. Have used it for a fair few years now, and I've never found a cleaner campsite anywhere.
Also very pleasant owners, and if you can get the chap to talk about climbing he seems to have done a fair bit himself in the past.
Generally full of friendly climbers in the summer season too.
