Hi all going to be based in the Fort William area in the next couple of weeks....what are some good grade 2 / 3 winter climbs with a mountaineering feel to them.....

Ledge Route on the Ben. Best in its grade (II)

North East Ridge of Aonach Beag.

Ben Nevis - Castle Ridge III
Ben Nevis - Ledge Route II
(also Tower Ridge III - but for the experienced unless you want an epic)

Carn Dearg Meadhonach East Ridge II (& potentially combined withe Ben via Carn Mor Dearg Arete) - approach from Nevis Range uplift
Aonach Beag - NE Ridge III (remote-ish but definitely mountaineering!)

Ring of Steall grade I

+ plenty down in Glen Coe...

Felt like III to me. I often mention Green when someone else suggests Tower Ridge.

Dorsal Arete. Best alpine ridge in Scotland.

Not meaning to be funny, but you are going to one of the top winter climbing venues in Scotland, covering a vast array of climbs at the grades you are talking about. Forum recommendations are fine, but you really need to get yourself a guidebook. (SMC Scottish Winter Climbs should do the trick).

I have a guide book..................just wanted some recommendations away from the normal named routes.....but hey sorry!

In reply to Gav Parker: Never done it, but the east ridge of Beinn Chaorain (sp) towards Meagaidh might be worth a look. Seems to be crop up regularly on the Lochaber guides' blogs.

I just noticed you only joined the forum recently. Saying Dorsal Arete is a default joke answer for loads of questions.

What is the best Grade V in Glencoe? Well Dorsal Arete of course.

I imagine some of the routes on the West Face of Aonach Mor are quite alpine but I have not done them. Perhaps someone else can confirm?
