So just as a reminder, if you have a Canon compact you can install open source CHDK software onto your camera. This allows you to do all sorts of cool things that the camera is capable of but Canon didn't implement. Not one which was mentioned in the previous thread is that it allows the lower end compacts to shoot RAW (DNG). I have an IXUS 115 and I now find it takes rather nice RAW files. Does make it slower though, which is no biggie for landscapes but would not be usable for action photography.
