Agreed. The first Parker novel I read was "The Jugger"; one event in it was so startling, I almost dropped the book.
For those who don't know, the Parker novels were written by Richard Stark (real name Donald Westlake). Wonderfully sparse and engaging writing.
The film is based on the excellent story "Flashfire".
The book is now being marketed as simply "Parker" with a picture of Mr Statham and Ms Lopez on the cover.
