One of the chaps at work has one, and has no complaints. The only problem with this camera is that you will probably want to use it more than your daughter once you see how good the images are.

If a few months, or year down the road and you are thinking about another lens, then you won't go wrong with a fixed 35mm lens. This lens does not zoom, which means that you either have to move closer or further away from your subject. On the plus side the lens is pin-sharp and superb for shooting in the dark or indoors where a flash would spoil the moment.

When I bought my nikon dSLR I bought a 55-200mm lens. In the 8 years that I have owned this lens, I have used it less than 10 times. Just an observation.

A friend recently binned a D3100 after it packed in with this problem:

She managed to get it going by following a DIY fix from youtube but it didn't work for long.

D3200 kit available for £324 online.

On a cropped sensor I would struggle with a 35mm, but that being said I am a sucker for a wide-angle shot...

In reply to smithtom82: I think a 2nd Nikon D90 would be a good bet.

They're only £280 with lens on Amazon:

Get one. You'll struggle to get more camera for the money.

The D90 is ancient now, in camera terms. It might be a better spec than the D3100, but I'd rather have new with a warranty.

And FFS take no notice of 'issues' banged on about on Forums.

Although for the extra £50, I would get a D3200 if I was buying for my daughter.

A lot of people don't like Ken, usually because of their own jealousy and inadequacies, but he talks a lot of sense:

In reply to smithtom82: D3100 is a rock-solid enthusiasts camera, it also has the advantage of being one of the smallest and lightest DSLRs on the market which could be a useful feature for a 14 year old girl (I find it a key selling point as a 28 year old man) I'd go ahead and buy with no qualms. The D3200 has a better sensor, but unless you feel certain she's going to get really into it and starting editing the images etc then the D3100 will be fine.

Ken is also quite complementary with the 35mm lens

A good user friendly camera ideal for your first dslr. It has great software that actually teaches you howto use it great for a teenager.
