What have people used in the past on their walls?
I hear that homemade stuff (mix of sand and various paint) does not last.

In reply to French Erick:
Most climbing centres use a product called Coo-Var Suregrip Floor Paint, it is avaliable in about 8 colours of the shelf (grey, red, yellow, black, white, blue, light grey and green)
It can be purchased from or ordered thru all good paint stores, i even believe that the sheds (B&Q, Homebase) can get hold of it, but this will take longer.

Hope this helps

If you add a good portion of PVA glue to your home made mix, that will last longer....

or use a router to create some micro features and just use normal paint?
In reply to French Erick: I'm soon going to build my 3rd indoor wall. I mostly use B&Q masonry paint and then add dried sharp sand. Seems to wear well and have reasonable frictional characteristics, and is a relatively cheap option. If you need funkier colours, you can mix in a small can of emulsion base colour.
