In The Matrix, why do they have to go on a risky mission into the Matrix to see the Oracle?

Isn't she one of the free ones? Can't they pop round her house or something?

Oh that's right. The matrix was a deliberately imperfect environment, complete with crap phone signal, as the human brain couldn't cope with anything different.
