Can anyone make any recommendations for the cheapest accommodation possible in Rjukan, or just out of town, for Jan 2014. I've already tried www.rjukanhytte.com but they're booked up. There will be about 15 of us. Would really appreciate some suggestions if anyone has any.

In reply to james Mitchell: climb inn with the back packer option or very warm sleeping bags and tents/sleep in car

In reply to james Mitchell:

Cheap and Rjukan are two words that I'd never put in the same sentence. Anyway, in addition to the Climb Inn I'd try The Old School Hostel, or in consideration of the size of your party (which may be a limiting factor), you could also look into booking a couple of 8 person cabins/apartments in the Gaustatoppen ski area. A bit of googling will get you the relevant webpages.

Good luck.

The Old school Hostel is just about the cheapest place to stay in the whole of Norway although at 250Kr it is not cheap by british standards. There facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/rjukanoldschoolhostel?directed_target_id=0 or call them on +47 975 13 193.

Will.

In reply to james Mitchell: An alternative is to rent a whole house/cabin. There are a lot of weekend 'hyttes' in Norway, which can often be old houses, could be purpose built cabins.
So, how to look for these? Property in Norway is advertised on finn.no.
You go to finn.no, go to eiendom (property) and then go to feriehus til leie

http://www.finn.no/r/feriehus-hytteutleie/

YOu plug in the area, price range and so on and see what you can find.

Possibly cheaper than Rjukan?

In reply to james Mitchell: I have stayed at sanviken camping before and can recommend. As cheap as you'll find, and a bit out of town (which we preferred). Also has a sauna/ steam room to use and good access to routes on the side of the lake.

I'm trying to do the same thing, but in Feb 2014 (i.e. during Ice Climbing Festival): http://www.ukclimbing.com/forums/t.php?t=567351&new=7544921#x7544921

What was the overall/total cost based on 2 (maybe 4) people sharing? Is it warm dry in winter? Drying room available?

In reply to james Mitchell:

There are some abandoned huts along the track from the car park at Bolgen. Could be quite homely with a little imagination.
There are 3 or 4 huts in varying stages of decay.
