I'm need to digitise my old negatives and slides. I've beed thinking of getting one of these:

Anyone used a device like this, or have any recommendations for a scanner, or general comments about scanners?

Thanks.

In reply to David Coley: I use an Epson V700, which does a pretty good job.

The main advantage is that the slide carrier can take 12 slides at at time, anything less is a nightmare of perpetual changing of bits.

I haven't found the digital ice software much good other than for massively increasing file sizes and slowing scanning times, tbh, if you have a particularly good picture you will probably get better results from photoshop or paintshop pro. Beyond a certain resolution, it is very hard to see that there is any gain.

It remains a SLOW process!

If you've got loads of time to spare, fine. If not http://www.mr-scan.co.uk/ is a good bet. They have scanned slides for me going back to the 50's and I've been very happy generally. There are some examples on my photos here on UKC.

I have the V700 too, and agree with your comments on it. Only thing I'd add is that I found I got sharper scans after reversing the little spacers that separate the slide holder from the glass. I guess this depends on how thick your slide mounts are.

I'll second that. Someone on here (it may have been you!) recommended Mr Scan and I have been really delighted with the results. Excellent service except that they come back in a random order so make sure you number the slides. People I know who has scanned their own slides seems to have pretty rubbish and extremely time consuming results. Paying Mr Scan about 30p a slide was definitely worth it!

I could undercut them, and charge 28p, to pay off the cost of the scanner.

And I wouldn't mix them up!
In reply to David Coley:

I've just bought a Quato scanner from a german company called Scandig. They carry a comprehensive range of scanners and provide a wealth of information and advice to help with choices.

First results from the Quato machine seem very good.
