I think the kind of answer you're after is:
I wouldn't be too worried about temperatures in October.
However, what is more worrying is that I’ve also heard that this year it’s been fairly dry out there, which tends to mean that even if temperatures are low, then water won’t be available to form ice, and so structures will take longer to build. I don’t know if this has ‘remedied’ in the last couple of weeks.
It's a roll of the dice at any time of the year, and you may well have great conditions. However December is early season, so the ice will likely still be building, and temperatures won’t generally be so low as they are in ‘winter proper’ later in the season.
So, you pays your money, you takes your chances.
I personally would take my chances later, but I've the flexibility to do so.
