My friends husband to be was telling her about how he loved that song and that the lyrics meant a lot to him as they resonated with him when he was growing up before he eventually moved to London.
She had to tell him the lyrics were about a young gay man coming out and he was agog

I can remember seeing the Communards at a GLC Festival for Jobs in Battersea Park in 1985, and Jimmy Somerville's voice as he was hitting the high notes on 'You are my world' was absolutely wonderful. Probably one of the stand-out performances I've ever seen.

My wife and I were just listening to this tune on youtube the past week, on holiday with free wifi, and thinking the same as yourself.
Then we couldn't agree if, at the time, he was publicly out in the music press, and the song was openly recognised about being gay.

Yes, of course he was. I thought all his songs were about being gay - 'Ain't Necessarily So', and so on.

In reply to andymac: Just back from my hols and have belatedly seen the Boots advert. I find it a bit odd. Given the subject matter of the song.. it doesn't seem to fit right with a cheesy christmas advert. Maybe some young marketing bod just thought - oooh nice song and wasn't even born when it was in the chart. Let alone understand what the song is about. Even more odd that a big red socialist like JS has granted permission for it to be used in a boo hiss capitalist way.
