Listening to Rhod Gilbert on R2 this afternoon and this came on.

Crikey ,what a brilliant tune.

Back in the day ,I would never have admitted to liking a Bronski Beat song.

But now in my advancing, late 30's ,and being somewhat more mature, I am prepared to doff my hat and say;

Fine work Mr Sommerville. Brave video too.

Tune is going on the ipod .definite mile cruncher.

Would be grateful if someone would post a ytube clip.wont play ball with me

My friends husband to be was telling her about how he loved that song and that the lyrics meant a lot to him as they resonated with him when he was growing up before he eventually moved to London.
She had to tell him the lyrics were about a young gay man coming out and he was agog

Was aware that he was gay, just as erasure etc were. However have forgotten just how good the video was and still is

In reply to Furthur:

Cheers Furthur.

My quest is now to find an epic 90's remix of this too.

In reply to the sheep:

It's quite powerful stuff.

Must have created a bit of a stir back in the day.

(No idea what it's like, I've not bothered listening to it yet.)

I have a 7" vinyl single of that, somewhere!

Can't be sure, but I've got some idea it was a slightly different version, as I can't remember it being badged as Bronski Beat.

In reply to shantaram: Don't Leave Me This Way was (is) a much better track though. Very uplifting youtube.com/watch?v=ifAtvI48R_0&

But that was a cover. STB always felt like it was written from the heart. Brilliant track.

I can remember seeing the Communards at a GLC Festival for Jobs in Battersea Park in 1985, and Jimmy Somerville's voice as he was hitting the high notes on 'You are my world' was absolutely wonderful. Probably one of the stand-out performances I've ever seen.
andymac 07 Nov 2013
In reply to andymac:

Somerville probably never got the credit he was due ,for whatever reason.

A lot of his work and Smalltown Boy had a lot of competition back in the 80's

Standard of tunes was just immense.

We will never see the likes again ,imo

Quality ,diverse brilliant music at every turn.

Not the formulaic bullshit we are stuck with now.

In reply to Furthur:

To be fair ,Wee Jimmy did the decent thing.

The busker was murdering it.

"It's a hit"

My wife and I were just listening to this tune on youtube the past week, on holiday with free wifi, and thinking the same as yourself.

Then we couldn't agree if, at the time, he was publicly out in the music press, and the song was openly recognised about being gay.

I see Boots have made an excellent choice for their Xmas advert.

Lots of pennies in the Bronski /Somerville coffers.

Sounds great .

Yes, of course he was. I thought all his songs were about being gay - 'Ain't Necessarily So', and so on.

In reply to andymac: Just back from my hols and have belatedly seen the Boots advert. I find it a bit odd. Given the subject matter of the song.. it doesn't seem to fit right with a cheesy christmas advert. Maybe some young marketing bod just thought - oooh nice song and wasn't even born when it was in the chart. Let alone understand what the song is about. Even more odd that a big red socialist like JS has granted permission for it to be used in a boo hiss capitalist way.

Times change! Still a great song though.
