In reply to iksander: There's nowhere really bad in Inverness. The rougher parts of town (such as they are) are South Kessock/Merkinch, Dalneigh and Hilton.
For the uni, I'd be looking at somewhere in Culloden (where I've just moved from), Westhill, Cradlehall Drakies or Inshes. The west side of town (Kinmylies, Scorguie, Clachnaharry) would give you the worst commute - it can get a little busy through the centre of town at rush hour, but it's such a small place that it isn't really a big deal.
