It's well known that 80% or more of the population are idiots, and like sh!t like One Direction and other creations of Cowell's bowels. But every now and then, a genuinely good pop tune gets to number one and is played on the radio multiple times per hour until everyone eventually hates it.

Now I haven't listened to the charts for 10 years or perhaps more like 20, but I remember these tunes:

youtube.com/watch?v=bd2B6SjMh_w&

youtube.com/watch?v=f7lV8Q79Yqk&

Can anyone think of any others, or has everything else that people en masse actually liked been soul-crushing shite? I don't think that stuff before I was born like David Bowie or The Beatles or whatever really counts as they didn't have to compete with the type of soulless industrial scale commercialism pop music has suffered over the past couple of decades.

Over to you...

No, they just produced truly great records then.

Not sure the soft gay porn vid distracted me enough from the shitness of the track, unfortunately.

If you like that Gnarls Barkley track, you might like Mungo Jerry - In The Summertime - No 1 in 1970

youtube.com/watch?v=wvUQcnfwUUM&

If you like a more punk feel, then I could point to The Offspring - Pretty Fly (for a White Guy) in 1999

youtube.com/watch?v=nzY2Qcu5i2A&

Or Rage Against Again The Machine - Killing in the Name - belatedly No 1 in 2009

youtube.com/watch?v=bWXazVhlyxQ&

On a more poppy theme from 2000, Sonique - It Feels So Good

youtube.com/watch?v=hVzvdCKuu4w&

and I'm quite fond of Lady GaGa's Bad Romance, also a No 1 in 2009

youtube.com/watch?v=qrO4YZeyl0I&

with apparently more than 546million views on youtube

Just looked at the list do number ones for the year

http://www.number-ones.co.uk/2013-number-ones.html

Only heard 2 of them, and one of them - Get Lucky - was one of the worst and overhyped songs of the year. But Royals by Lorde is quite good, and a distinct change of style from their Eurovision winner.

Oh yes, Mungo Jerry with the most offensive lyric ever to grace the airwaves.
Or were they, like Clarkson, only joking.

This one was promoted by Mark and Lard to great effect:

Brilliant.

This was sort of good too (at the time), but just cause the sample is great - the original tune is far, far better, and now the track sounds horribly dated and bad.

I see what you mean - just read them properly, can't imagine the furore that would cause today

Tried to post this earlier but think I deleted it by mistake - Going Underground was one of four no. 1s from the Jam in the 80s, along with Start, Town Called Malice and Beat Surrender. The decade also produce a couple of no 1s from Blondie (Atomic and Call Me) and The Specials' Ghost Town.

From the OP

" I don't think that stuff before I was born ... really counts"

Jon is 34 according to his profile, so most of the 70s suggestions are invalid in the context of the OP.

I proffer "Never Ever" by All Saints.

Not sure if you're taking this piss there. Miley Cyrus is precisely what I was describing by the terms "soulless industrial scale commercialism" and particularly "soul crushing shite".

Carly Rae Jepson - Call me Maybe

All the Pet Shop Boys number ones (West End Girls, It's a Sin, Heart, Always on my mind)

Beyonce - Crazy in Love

Eminem - Real Slim Shady, Stan, Without Me (not so keen on his others)

Oasis - Some might say, Don't look back in Anger

Sam and the Womp - Boom boom boom

Prodigy - Firestarter (the last punk song at no.1?)

Easily done, I thought Common People was a number 1 before I looked it up.

No Sleep ´til Hammersmith made to the top of the album charts in 1981. IMO one of the best live albums ever.

Album charts were anyway more relevant than the singles charts. Did anyone really buy singles? Single charts make much more sense now with MP3 downloads.

You're kidding right? just a bad rehash of the Clash's brilliant Guns of Brixton
 Blue Straggler 18 Nov 2013
In reply to ripper:

In the context of the OP though, which seems to be pushing a notion that all number 1s are by puppet bands doing factory-written songs selected for them by committee, Dub Be Good To Me is pretty dandy. And this is coming from someone who finds Norman Cook's face to be the most punchable in the land

Ha! I didn't like that he speeded it up for the remix. I also have other issues with that song hitting no. 1 though they are not directly related to the music or the band... but basically all the other bands on that tiny record label (wiija) decided that they too should try for some chart action, and started trying (and failing) to make hit singles instead of being proper indie individualists. Sigh. (label head Gary Walker said as much himself)
