When I fill down/right etc the result of the formula is not changing from that of the first cell, but if I 2click on each cell the formula displays correctly (modified for the position of the cell) and if i press enter the expected result is dislpayed.

How can I fix this I just want to ctrl + d/r and have the formula fill down and disply the results

sounds like you have automatic calculation switched off.

if you are using 2007 or later go to Formulas ->calculation options and switch to automatic.
Prior to that tools-options-calculation.

Or alternatively just hit f9 to refresh them all, although only worth it if you have serious amounts of data.
