Evening folks,
I forgot to post this a day or two ago.

The free software "Stellarium" has ISON. http://www.stellarium.org/

I'm just dialing in a load of locations and times so I can plan my photography...

Watching a really interesting programme on Ison at the moment. (Nat Geo channel)
In 3 days is passes near to the sun and some folk think it may not survive the close fly by.

It may also be visible to the naked eye then. For those interested in seeing it, apparently 26th Dec or there abouts will be the optimal time.

Interestting stuff.

In reply to grumpybearpantsclimbinggoat:

I'm a bit puzzled ; the chart at the side says the closest approach to earth is 26th December but the animation shows it to be at least a week earlier

In reply to Denni:

Unless I'm misreading this I thought it was brightest at the start of December?

This will hopefully be my 4th coemt viewing, very lucky

Thanks for the reminder, just installed this on my openSUSE linux, and managed to find ISON pretty much straight away...

Oh no! Is it going to crash into the Earth and wipe us all out
 d_b 25 Nov 2013
In reply to Al Evans:

Yes. That is exactly what is going to happen.

Unfortunately he is too expensive these days, so they are sending Bruce Forsyth instead.

So if we follow it every night will we bump into some 3 kings and a squawking bairn on the 25th?

Looks like a couple of lonely sperm heading towards the earth egg.

A live feed tomorrow when it passes by the sun, will it make it or will it melt!
estivoautumnal 27 Nov 2013
In reply to Denni:

Will it be visible from Equatorial regions?
OP Denni 28 Nov 2013
In reply to estivoautumnal:

Apparently it has survived its brush with the sun and should be seen in the Northern Hemisphere in the next few days, albeit at distance and weather dependent.

Not too sure about round equator area, where abouts are you? Here is a good guide of where to see it etc.

In reply to estivoautumnal:

This link will supposedly show nearly real time of the comet starting at 1pm Eastern Time (US) which should be about now......

If you click on dataset 0131, last one on the top row, you might get to see it pass the sun. I think its pretty amazing they can get an image like that of the sun and beam it back in real, or near real time.
OP Denni 28 Nov 2013
In reply to estivoautumnal:

Sorry, me again being geeky. 1845 ish will be its closest approach to the sun which is called perihelion so watch the second set of data streams from half 6 ish, if you want to that is ;0)
OP Denni 28 Nov 2013
In reply to estivoautumnal:

Forgot the data link...

The way they're talking it sounds as if Ison has left the building. In pieces.
 JamButty 28 Nov 2013
In reply to Denni:

Whats happening - did it live?
OP Denni 28 Nov 2013
In reply to JamButty:

Live stream which you can rewind:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/11/28/live_watch_comet_ison_sun_video/

Ignore what I said earlier about it possibly surviving, mainstream news making a guess. On the feed they are talking about it in the past tense so doesn't look like it...
