Django Reinhardt: Best of.
Leonard Cohen: Dear Heather.

Reason for? They are all great albums.

Bodily Functions - Herbert

Because it's where really good electronic music, original songwriting and a bit of jazz meet and form something greater than the sum of its parts.
 Alyson 20 Nov 2013
In reply to coinneach: Let The Man Speak by Wooderson because it's my mate's band and he's broke.

great choice although i'd probably have suggested Europe Live '72.
Why? because everyone needs some G.D. in their life.

Can somebody explain the appeal of Grateful Dead to me? I was listening to Marc Riley on 6 music last night bang on (again) about how amazing White Denim are, and somebody compared them to GD. Both sound like tedious pub-rock bands to me - technically competent but very, very dull. What am I missing?
In reply to coinneach: Now that's what I call music 500?
ice.solo 21 Nov 2013
In reply to victim of mathematics:

never heard of white denim, but the dead (to me) are like pastorals in classical music - they are a vibe.
for some its nostalgia about the fantasy of the 60s, but ive always found them to be hall bearers of better times, that things are not always the dirge that so much rock n roll dwells in. they have their sadnesses, but they illuminate them and not in a cheesy way.

to me the dead are about hard work, and friends, and being an optimist, and they construct this vibe with genuine talent, integrity and goodwill. the dead gave a f*ck and represented a scene that did too (well aside from the escapist bong smokers who were at least harmless).

only their very early stuff is good as studio albums, theyve been a live thing for decades so 'good' dead albums = good gigs as the 2 suggested here show.
pub band? far from it. think 20,000 trippers who dont need to know what comes next.

it helps too to hear it very loud; theres a lot going on in there. being high helps but is not essential. good music to drive to. and at picnics.
 graeme jackson 21 Nov 2013
In reply to ice.solo: Couldn't have put it any better myself so I won't even try. Suffice to say one of my musical outlets nowadays is a grateful dead tribute and as a bass player it's amazing music to play. There's influences from Bach, through bernstien to mingus and Miles in there.

It's a wonderful life - Sparklehorse
A beautiful album that probably ticks three of the genres on your list.
 ring ouzel 21 Nov 2013
In reply to coinneach: Well either Close to the Edge by Yes because its the pinnacle of Prog and Prog is the pinnacle of music or I would agree with Thin Bob and plump for Perry Como's Songbook.

I much prefer 'Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea', still one of my favourite albums.
Others would be 'The Clash' or 'London Calling', by The Clash of course,
David Bowie - Hunky Dory or Heroes
The Fall - Live at the Witch Trials
Muddy Waters - Hard Again

and countless others...
 graeme jackson 21 Nov 2013
In reply to coinneach:
kate Bush. You have to have some Kate Bush. Most people would probably recommend The Hounds of Love but my current favourite is The Red Shoes.
 tomrainbow 21 Nov 2013
In reply to graeme jackson: I wouldn't - The Dreaming is not only the best Kate Bush album but it's the best album ever made.

REM greatest hits.

Added it myself the other night ,after the Cd gathering dust for years .and years.

If you don't have it already, Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart
If you do have it already, Today's Active Lifestyles by Polvo (which I am currently addicted to)

This is all assuming you already have The Rite of Spring.

Brilliant!

Thanks for all the replies........

Got Sparklehorse on now mainly because it's such a good band name.

As to other suggestions.

Miles Davis.........got A Kind Of Blue but I'll now listen to some of his other stuff

Zappa...............got loads

I'm kind of agreement with the "Don't GET the Dead gang" I've dabbled but it doesn't really appeal to me.

Don't fancy The Clash ( 2nd most over rated band ever IMHO )

Beefheart.........yep!

Got a couple of Kate Bush on there

I tried listening to Hawkwind after a 30 year hiatus the other night and was reminded that I might need to take as many drugs as was used to make to like it!

Best suggestion so far is from my 12 year old.

"Number 500 can't be any worse than the 499 that are already on there!

In reply to coinneach: 500 in Roman numerals is D, which might provide a few suggestions. Tenacious D, perhaps?

Or perhaps whichever Proclaimers album has 500 miles on it?

T.

I suspected they might still be grooving...in an alternate universe!! Good on 'em!
I was introduced to Mr Hillage buy a right hairy hippy in dungarees...I still distain his trousers, but appreciate his music

In reply to coinneach: If you haven't any Richard Thompson then take your choice - latest is Electric but prior to that Dream Attic recorded live with his amazing guitar playing
OP coinneach 21 Nov 2013
In reply to Chris the Tall:

Half Man Half Biscuit on now

( Sparklehorse were a bit gloomy! )

 Steve Perry 21 Nov 2013
In reply to coinneach: Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf.

It's the best album this century.
 gd303uk 21 Nov 2013
In reply to tomrainbow: the b side of the hounds of love lp ( the ninth wave) is a master piece ,
And the production of the sensual world is incredible, a brilliant sounding album especially when the trio bulgarka harp up.
The dreaming is a stunning album also.

Kate is my secret pleasure , hidden among the plastikman and Mississippi John hurt records are a few Kate Bush records. The ninth wave is my favourite.

But for a must have record it would be a Fela Kuti Lp maybe , Zombie or Coffin for head of state.
Or a Can album , Tago Mago, or , Ege Bamyasi.
In reply to ice.solo: I was lucky enough to see the Grateful Dead at the Hollywood Music Festival (The one near Newcastle Under Lyme not the one in California)in 1970. I went along for other bands but The Dead were the best act over the whole weekend. - 30 minutes of Dark Star weaving up from the stage at high volume on a sunny afternoon made me a fan for life. Get them live - there are lots of bootlegs besides the two great albums already mentioned.
Another offer for your 500th is Kind of Blue by Miles Davies - the best jazz album ever made.

Which pubs do you drink in? If this is what you call dull, then what do you call good?
