In response to JR's controversial piece a while back that got so many people in a fluster ( http://footlesscrow.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/xs-essence-of-trad-plea-and.html ) here's a well written and imaginative piece from someone called Caff. It's the sort of clever, literate writing that we could do with more of; I suppose that's what Footless Crow is for!

Excellent, thanks. Particularly liked the '... brave and extremely bouncy dwarf...' bit!

Love it!

'At this point, he realised that the relationship he had with the rock was at best tenuous and was not wholly formed...'

I suspect a few of us have come to similar realisations in unholy places.

Excellent. I've read (and seen quite a bit of footage) of Redhead's mystic, ahem, posturing over the years. This article is a welcome antidote.

I agree with a lot of his basic principles but the tedium of all the imagery does my nut in.

Superb. I really had no idea how much we owed to the Iron Lady, for without her, none of this would have come to pass.

My opinion has just done a full 180.

And while I used to blame her for all that is anathema in modern climbing, I realise that she was responsible for the Golden Age. Or perhaps it was the previous government...

Such a pity that this article has a go at Redhead.

What exactly IS climbing about today?

Does anyone feel that they can make a definitive statement on a definition?

Twas ever thus, the younger mocking the older.

maybe the article's author would like to explain to us the latest update on this definition.

I only know what climbing definitelyis about for me,even though I may pronounce on others.

Why? He's happy to have a go at anyone he deems deserving of his ranting.

Trying to get to the top. 'Twas ever thus, was't not?

Apart from traverses. That's about going sideways.

In the spirit of captious forum punditry, I'm not convinced the article is quite as literate or clever as people are making out...but I still enjoyed reading it

I think the author has earned his right to a riposte. And it's more good-natured than what he (and others) received from the good JR..

> What exactly IS climbing about today?

Same as it's always been. Pull on. See what happens. Live with it.

> Twas ever thus, the younger mocking the older.

And elders mocking elders. See Blakey's superb account on Supertopo of the former Geordie A Team hitting Mello (which hits back). "Ye were shite in the 1980s an' ye're still shite!"

Mick (still shite)
