New Years Eve in Central Exeter - food and drink

Planning a quietish New Year evening away in Exeter with the wife after a busy family Christmas.

We are booked into a hotel near the cathedral, any local suggestions for a place that would fit the bill - not looking for a gala dinner or haute cuisine but a friendly place with decent food, real ale, hopefully independent - not a big fan of the chains.

All local knowledge appreciated !

I have had good food at the Rusty Bike, just outside the city centre. It is independent (or at least claims to be), with a sister pub in the town centre (the Fat Pig).
