In need of some pointers on suitable winter routes for beginner winter walkers/mountaineers in the Lake district (or north wales at a push). Anyone have any suggestions?

In reply to David Clover:

Try Custs gully on Great End: http://mark-mountainjourneys.blogspot.com.es/2013/02/a-gorgeous-winters-day...

Or for something a touch easier there's the broad gully to the right on Brown cove crag: http://mark-mountainjourneys.blogspot.com.es/2013/02/an-icy-day-around-helv... (photos here show the gully with only very thin snow cover but shows the crag well enough.

There's also the Helvellyn ridges (Striding & Swirral) - these make a really good day out

Have fun

In reply to David Clover:

The Helvellyn area holds the most snow. The Striding Edge - Swirral Edge circuit is good, as is the Sharp Edge - Horsfell ridge circuit on Blencathra (but doesn't hold snow as well).

Lots of easy gully routes on the eastern side of the Helvellyn ridge, and the ridge leading up to Nethermost Pike is decent.

In reply to David Clover: Hi Dave, you should get hold of the lakes winter climbing guide as the topos are v good - its always a good idea to know where your going. My suggestion would be tarn crag gully 1, 2 or 3 located close to dollywagen pike. Window, custs or central gully on great end are good, although central can be avalanche prone following heavy snow etc

Cheers Davey
