....how absolutely, *absolutely* hilarious Man U's current travails are?

The only thing that’s slightly spoiling it is that I genuinely fear that Moyes might have a stroke, but apart from that it’s better than one could have hoped for. The legions of glory-hunting nonces on the internet going on about how they all knew Moyes was the wrong man and he’s got to go, and how all their players are shite (this isn’t terribly consistent with the Moyes complaint, but never mind), the sudden shift in the balance of refereeing decisions, the spate of dives (not that it’s doing Chelsea any harm) along with WDM’s continued assertions that he doesn’t like it, SAF glowering, rat agents talking in the papers about how their client wants out (read: is going to sting you for more money while you’re down) – all of it.

It’s just all such wonderful feel-good material – even better than the Nigella and Brooks trials, the latter of which has gone disappointingly off the boil, though of course there’s still the conviction – excuse me, verdict – to come, of course.

Whilst I'm not anti Man-U having been to many a match at OT (and I quite like the integrity of Moyes) I like the fact that the end result is less predictable this year than at any time in the last few years.

Arsenal, City, Everton, Spurs, Liverpool, Man U, Chelsea could all conceivably take the title and the top 4 spots are even more difficult to predict that previous years.

Might bring a few more people back to football now there's a bit of excitement.
In reply to TheDrunkenBakers:

Oh, I quite like Moyes too, and I see no reason to believe that if he were given £1 billion to spend on players instead of interest payments he couldn’t in time drag the Ure back up to where Citeh are. But I don’t like United, most of all for their crass commerciality (The Theatre Of Dreams FFS, and abandoning the FA Cup for a money-making foreign tour) and the loathsome Surrey element of their fan base, and there’s no club I’d sooner see relegated. Again. Not that I’m expecting to have that pleasure, but the present amusement is a worthy substitute.

The Emirates Stadium?

We've been through the FA cup thing before, it was the FAs decision under pressure from the government.

But Hey ho, some do need their pantomime villains.

>We've been through the FA cup thing before, it was the FAs decision under pressure from the government.

The Ure could perfectly well have played in the third round with their youth team and taken their chances; that would have been the decent thing to do.

It's true that the lucky win at OT against Arsenal stands out as the best achievement of the season so far, and also of course that if the little boy weren’t injured you’d likely be doing better than you are. Still, I doubt you’ll win the war this particular season, and I doubt you’ll be too confident about the return fixture either.

Emirates Stadium – yes, of course, I hate that as well. But it’s hardly the unique level of wankery that naming your stadium The Theatre Of Dreams represents, is it?
In reply to johncoxmysteriously:

There was a great comment on the guardian story on the spectre of Ferguson haunting Moyes. In reference to the sight of SAF, Bobby Charlton and Robson sitting in the stands at Sunderland all in hats, saying they resembled the Soviet Politburo standing on the wall of the Kremlin.

It is quite amazing how poor they are at the moment. The trouble is the low morale is like a rolling snowball gaining momentum. Vidic's agent saying he has options elsewhere.Rooney probably wont sign a new contract, and RVP is as brittle as glass. The players will get more and more nervous each time they step out onto the pitch, Cleverly must be dreading seeing his name on the team sheet right now.

Anyway, nothing money can't fix....as has been demonstrated by the noisey neighbours and Chelsea

In reply to Bjartur i Sumarhus:

It'll get worse before it gets better, I reckon - look at Liverpool.

SAF says in his latest autobiography he promised Skunky he'd be the manager for three years, but at Christmastime last year he decided he couldn't hack losing the title on goal difference again and was going to pack it in. I suspect S will start agitating for a move soon enough, if he hasn't already, and presumably Rooney will be doing his usual 'not enough ambition, I'm treated like a slave, I'm out of here - wait, what another £50k a week, you say?' routine shortly as well. The ratting's going to be one of the best parts.

we're going to have a Christmas world cup in a stadium that looks like that!
In reply to johncoxmysteriously:

Oh for sure. The money required to fix that team is astronomical (with Moyes as manager) This summer will be interesting. Will they attract the talent they need if no CL football, a manager and backroom staff that lacks respect in the highest ranks of football and lots of other teams with loads of money and CL football.

I suspect anyone they sign will be what's left after Man City / Chelsea / Arsenal have had their picks (and the rest of Europe too) so agree no quick fix. With the perfect storm of Liverpool/Everton and to a tiny degree, Spurs coming good...it's getting pretty crowded up there

In reply to Papillon:

As is this, indeed, of a rather more cheering variety.

How long will it be, I wonder? I think it might be sooner than people think and that the terrace reaction will a lot more favourable than people fear.

You obviously didn't check the match stats from last night's game. Or the starting line up.

No recognised strikers in the UTD team but despite that they had more shots on target and more corners than Sunderland.

UTD's main problem at the moment is scoring goals despite having lots of possession. Not sure why but they seem unable to really go for the jugular this year. Perhaps it shows that Ferguson was able to impose his own character on that of his team.

Agree about giving grounds silly names. At least they didn't call it "The Stadium of Light"...or Shight as it is referred to in Newcastle.

I havent mentioned last nights game other than who was in the stands, my comments are more about this season.

Man U's problems are definitely in midfield, as well as up front and in defence. But midfield is where the real gap in class shows compared to the teams they compare themselves against

Forget the stats. "A win is a win", and that's a quote from Moyes when he was at Eveton.

From what I can gather, as far as teams go, everytime they take to the pitch the only thing that causes the MU back four any worries, is MU's midfield.

There ain't a hope in hell of Man U, Spurs or Everton taking the title. There's an outside chance Liverpool may. Anyway I'm loving this season.

I couldn't stop laughing for about a month after Moyes was appointed, ridiculous decision by Man U, but great for football. May the slide continue for many a year.

Maybe, in that they can buy more or less who they want (presuming the player is willing to go there), but at least their fans are still down to earth.

I don’t find ‘Stadium of Light’ quite so wanky – obviously it’s pretty absurd, but it doesn’t carry the annoying Disneyfied overtones that TTOD does.

No it's not. Anyone who's been paying attention, and not just lapping up the media hype, would have noticed that they've had a poor squad for a while. The fact that they won the PL last season is both an embarrassment to the teams with far better squads, and a testament to Mr Ferguson's ability to convince/bully players into refusing to lose.

In reply to johncoxmysteriously:

> It'll get worse before it gets better, I reckon - look at Liverpool.

In 1988 Liverpool won the title by 9 points.
In 1989 Liverpool lost the title on goal difference courtesy of a last minute goal by their nearest challengers.
In 1990 Liverpool strolled to yet another league title.
In 1991 Liverpool employed a Scottish manager to replace their previous, highly successful, Scottish manager.

Liverpool have now gone over 23 years since winning a title.

In 2011 United won the title by 9 points.
In 2012 United lost the title on goal difference courtesy of a last minute goal by their nearest challengers.
In 2013 United strolled to yet another league title.
In 2013 United employed a Scottish manager to replace their previous, highly successful, Scottish manager.

More this than the other I reckon. And that's where deluded Ure fans crowing about how winning/late goals/whatever are 'in the club's DNA' (a *fabulously* wanky phrase which is a sure sign of a Surrey gloryhunter) are so wrong. It's in Ferguson's DNA. As to the club, you might as well say the 1974 relegation is in its DNA. The club overachieved in Fergie's time, and nothing whatever stops them underachieving in someone else's time.

Since the selling off of stadium names, there's been a few slipped under the radar...

Along with the Emirates we have:
Ricoh Arena
Etihad Stadium
King Power Stadium
The Amex Stadium

KC Stadium
DW Stadium
Keepmoat Stadium (Although they are at least social housing specialists)
Kassam Stadium
B2net Stadium

and the latest change - iPro Stadium, which is Derby's Pride Park.

Odd that a place dedicated to hairy a*sed blokes running round a muddy field chasing a plastic ball and bashing in to each other should be given such a poetic name.

So surely it should be a club that should be applauded, not despised, by those bemoaning the state of English football?

That's a bit harsh, I've been a Blue for 37 years and been through thick 'n thin. It was 15 years ago when we scraped out of Div2 with that fabulous goal from Dickov and penalties Nicky Weaver saved that started our revival. We'd be in the lower divisions now if that hadn't happened.

At least our owners have integrity and are investing right across the board, especially in the junior ranks and training facilities for English youngsters, cutting deals with Oldham and other clubs to keep them healthy and offer better opportunities for our academy players in proper football rather than reserve games.

I've never been a bitter Blue in spite of all the shit I've had from Utd fans at school, college, work, the pub, everywhere over the years. I've not been taking the piss out of reds this season, as the real fans know there's a shift taking place but I'm enjoying the reaction of plastics and the media as their sacred cows are getting butchered on a daily basis.

Do I feel sorry for Moyes? No, he shouldn't have sacked Phelan, Meulensteen and the staff, that was his biggest mistake. Without Rooney and RVP Utd are an average mid-table side and I can't resist schadenfreude on occaisions like last night. It's been obvious for the last three or four seasons that the clock was ticking. The Govan Piss Can's defence of the Glazers was a disgrace and the chickens are home and roosting. Andy Cole said last night "Well Sunderland have to visit Old Trafford" - you mean the place where any team can pick up three points???

Utd have setup Moyes to fail, especially that stupid " Chosen One" banner... No player of any quality is going to want to sign for them in January.

The rest of the season is going to be very good and entertaining for all of us.

They would have been, if they'd behaved with more class. They've got themselves hated in a way Liverpool never were. Even in 1999 I remember I was reasonably on their side when they scored against Bayern, though it's astonishing to think of that now. But since then - oh my dear sweet Lord. I'd even root for Barcelona against them, I think.
