I'm hopefully heading up to The Ben this weekend and was unsure which guide would be the best.

SMC - Scottish Winter Climbs (2008)
SMC - Ben Nevis (2002)
Cicerone - Winter Climbs in Ben Nevis & Glen Coe (2010)

I like the idea of buying the definitive guide, but i suspect one of the selected guides will be better for my purposes. (I don't get up to Scotland in the winter all that often).

Is there plenty to go at at each grade in the selective guides?

Cheers

Yes.

Post a report if you manage to exhaust all the options. Is it just a weekend you're going for?

If you don't get up to Scotland much then I'd suggest the SMC Scottish Winter Climbs along with its summer stablemate as covering pretty well all of the classics you are likely to be wanting to do. (There's the two guides by Gary Latter for summer as well)

Of course if there's a queue on your chosen route then having the definitive guide helps a bit more with alternatives as waiting around for two or three parties in winter is no fun (nor is climbing below them!)

It'd be a pretty good weekend if I manage to tick the guidebook .
The way the weather is looking I think I'll settle for some decent sledging.

It would be a good weekend indeed, one I'd like to achieve! So many unticked routes in my guidebooks.
Have fun sledging.
