Ok, simple question
I am looking for some Climbable ice in the lakes weekend coming saturday22nd or sunday23rd, don't care which.

criteria,
1. needs to be ICE
2, does NOT need to be a recognised route,
3, Toprope practice only for a novice
4, would prefer it NOT to be a Long Long Long walk in(but if needs be)

any suggetions? will there be any likely venues?
I have climbed small Icefalls below Red Tarn in the past for example,
I am aware that there is a (number) of winter conditions reports for lakes on UKC, but cant be doing with the--------effort of reading through the constant dissing,
Please if you can help me, PM me, don't want to start a long argument

There are usually some small pitches that form on the very far left hand side <as you look at it face on> of Great End. Not sure about a safe toprope though.

Simple answer - no.

When we get two or three nights of frost, it'll be worth asking again. I've only scraped the ice off my car twice this winter...that tells you everything.

As for quick access - when its cold Honister can offer ice less than 5 mins walk away. But that's no it going to happen this winter. Here's a pic of Incline Fall III in better nick than today-

How about Kinlochleven? Its only 5 hrs away, just make sure you book.

When they form your best bet would be the shorter ice falls in the East Cove of Red Screes, when they are in they are easily seen from the road as you come up the Kirkstone pass from Troutbeck. To be honest though there is not much ice in the Lakes at the moment, the ice that was climbed last Sunday was mostly reasonably high snow ice and even that now needs a good freeze to come back in.

Problem is it is looking warm this week and there wasn't a huge amount of ice the weekend just gone. I would either just go to The Works if you want to practice some steep climbing technique or make the trip to Scotland.
