Hello

I will probably be heading to Stanage for some Grit climbing on the evening late afternoon of the 15th to climb on the 16th.

I am looking for some descent accommodation there or near there.

Can someone recommend me any descent accomodation?

The Little John in Hathersage has nice rooms, and sells food

http://www.littlejohnhotel.co.uk/hotel-cottages-rooms.html

you will often meet other climbers in the Bar there.

If you don't drive it is a short walk from the station and about 30 min walk to the Popular end of Stanage

Hi Savvas,
Glad to hear you are getting out climbing, the little john is probably a good bet if you are going by public transport.
Possibly a bit more expensive than a Thorpe farm bunkbarns but easier to get to and from and is near a few shops and amenities.

The only thing to be cautious about if bivying near or on stanage is to not shine too many lights around or you'll attract the warden and they may move you on. If you stay in robin hood's cave you can fix a curtain over the entrance to give you some space you can light with candles.
In reply to james wardle:

Hello James.

I have checked the website on my mobile and will look at the cottages in more detaqils on my desktop or laptop.

Hello Mick.

Thanks for that!

I take a week off from climbing indoors every month to rest - longer after an injury.

Hi Savvas. Have you camped before? Do you have a tent? I think I recall you saying you don't drive, you can walk from north lees campsite - maybe give them a call.

In reply to Mountain Spirit:

Camping and bivis are lovely when you have warm equipment but this is expensive for a first trip. My advice is find a place in a pub or bunkhouse.

The routes are reasonably short on stanage (up to ~20m at the tallest parts). Unlike sport climbing on limestone where many routes just draw a line up a random bit of rock, even the lower grade routes follow nice natural lines.
The grip is usually excellent but the holds are often less obvious and more rounded than those on limestone. If you can get jam it will serve you well for more than just vertical crack climbing. Have a look at the UKC vids on jamming presented by "The Wide Boys".

Some think that climbing grit is a bit of a specialist skill, I'm not convinced, I just think it takes a bit of getting used to.
Hope that helps.

I do not have at tent but I might buy one.

Will do.

Hello.

The LittleJohn is fully booked that Saturday....

Someone recommended the YHA in Hathersage but according to the website they are not taking anymore online bookings for that day (15th).

Thorpe Farm charge £120 for a single person - depending on the bunkhouse - and £12 per person for a group booking.

Camping may be a good choice if other accomodation is fully booked.

Hi Savvas.

You say Arriving Late on the 15th. That may make finding a good bivvy Spot harder if dark, Especially if the weather is not so good.

How and where are you Travelling to, and arriving at Stanage, From London?

Hope you have a great weekend.
In reply to gethin_allen:

Hello gethin.

The information helps a lot.

I have seen all of the videos including the latest two videos and attended their masterclass at The Castle Climbing Centre last year - I might do it again in June.

Good stuff!

I cannot to start jamming on grit!

How about putting a request in the Lifts and partners part of the forum?

You may get a sofa for the night of the 15th and a Climbing partner for the 16th?

what do you think?
In reply to Choss:

Hello Choss

I have got climbing partners for this trip but I would not mind staying ona sofa.

The sofa idea is great.

If you do a search you will find many bed and breakfast places near to Stanage, including quite a few in Hathersage. You will need to buy a tent, a sleeping mat, a sleeping bag suitable for winter, all better done with more time to make sensible choices and whatever, quite an expense.
In reply to Offwidth:

Hello.

You are right.

I think bed and breakfasts etc are better for a first timer.

I will leave the camping for next time.

If you didn't already exist Savvas, we'd have had to invented you!

UKC is a richer place with you in it

Hello.

If you invent me, wouldn't it be trolling or something?

I thought a lot of people on UKC find annoying and irritating.

In reply to Mountain Spirit:

Hi there, why don't you stay at a cheap hotel in Sheffield near the station, there are a couple of Holiday Inns, then jump the train to Hathersage next morning?
 spenser 05 Mar 2014
In reply to Mountain Spirit:

I think you've got yourself confused, the £120 is for "sole use" allowing you to have that block to yourself, if you just book for one person using the booking form you will only be charged £12 per night. I stayed last weekend and the several of the bunkhouses were only half full. If you call them up and let them know you are happy to share I'm sure they'll let you book for just the one person. We stayed in the hayloft last weekend and it was a little bit on the cold side at night so a decent sleeping bag is definitely recommended! If you don't have one then the cheaper option would be to call the YHA up and ask about staying there, they don't seem to allow online bookings for weekends at that hostel at this time of year.

the little john has gone right down hill in recent years and rarely has any climbers in it anymore (compared with 10 years ago anyway)
In reply to spenser:

Hello spenser

I think I am wrong about the £120 per night.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Hello Paul.

That does sound like a another good option.

Actually I was thinking of a Holiday Inn or Premier Inn.

Would I need to get two train tickets?
