Anyone else read this fine book on the history of Alpine mountaineering? I thought it was a bit of a slog but well worth it. The author's analysis of the relationship between Enlightenment thinking and the rise of mountaineering is really quite compelling and it's forced me to rethink my understanding of the subject. It isn't a book for beginners but I'd really recommend it to anyone looking for a deeper insight.

Written a wee review of the book here if anyone is interested.

Sounds interesting but how does it compare with books such as Macfarlane's 'Mountains of the mind', Fleming's or Hoiban's 'Invention d'Alpinisme' ?

In reply to Doug:

I'd say it's less accessible but it goes into far greater depth and the analysis is more detailed/insightful. It's a book for someone who has studied the basics of Alpine history and wants to learn more.
