I want an ultra wide lens for my DSLR.
Will the 2mm difference at the short end between these 2 lenses make much of a difference?

Yes and no. The issue is likely to be whether 8mm is more useful than 10mm. The latter already gives a pretty wide field of view with plenty of 'distortion'. I'm not sure more of the same is much 'better'. On the other hand, if you have the range, it doesn't mean you have to use it (how much self-deiscipline have you got?). Go play with one in a shop - only you can judge if it's what you want - but don't get wowwed by the novelty value of 8mm which might wear thin after a couple of 'rolls'.

Not easy to find stores with these in stock to try.
At the end of the day i guess it will boil down to whether i want to save 200 pounds and get the 10-20

what size sensor is it on? If on a crop sensor, either should be ok, 8mm on a full size sensor is going to be crazy wide - fine if thats what you want. Ive not tried the 8-16 but have got the 10-20 on my nikon (crop sensor) and I think its really great, however I rarely use it at 10mm I find Im often around 14mm. Ideally Id get the nikon 12-24 lens but its out of my price range.

Its only on APS-c.

I have an 8-16mm. I like it, and a couple of mm at the wide end is worth a lot more than at the long end. Note the poor max aperture.

You can see the difference in view here

Which also reviews everything else in the class.

The Sigma 10-20 has a bad reputation for getting duff copies, and the sharper copies are only ok. I didn't consider it. Only buy from somewhere you can return it to.

The Tokina 11-16mm is very well reviewed and is a good choice if you want fast rather than wide.

I want wide.
basically liked taking pictures with my gopro due to the wide lense (and that is crazy wide) and as such guess i have the my answer in that really.

No, don't want a fisheye but thanks.

Nice, every time i think i have decided on the 8-16 i see some nice pictures taken with the 10-20 which then leads to the saving i would get if i buy that one instead

Mine does seem quite sharp - I've not noticed anything obviously wrong about it. I've the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 as well and that's good enough for my needs, certainly I couldn't justify doubling the cost to get the equivalent Nikkor. Having said that, this - http://www.wexphotographic.com/buy-nikon-24-70mm-f2-8-g-af-s-ed-lens/p10230... is the lens I'd most like.

I also have the 10-20 and quite a few of the shots on my gallery are taken with it. I rarely use mine at 10mm though as it's quite blurry round the edges, particularly at a wide aperture and if I were buying again, I'd probably not go so wide but get the Tokina f2.8 11-16mm instead, it's super sharp in comparison.
In reply to Mikkel:
According to techradar the Tamron 10-24mm is sharpest at the wide end, but the Tokina is better in the middle and narrow end.

Not sure what body you're using, but DXO allows you to load individual lenses for comparison, here is one for the Canon options:
