Hi, I need to find a book called

The Little Red book of acoustics (2008) I have the most recent version 2013 but need to locate a copy of the 2008 book for reference purposes (a chapter in the 2008 book has not been included in the 2013 version)

Anyway, I can not find anywhere to get hold of a copy of the 2008 book at a reasonable price.

Amazon wants to charge £3888 + £2.80 delivery and another website I have found wants to charge $6868.90 + $10 delivery to the UK.

Seriously, where so they get these prices from the 2013 book only cost £25.

So, does anyone have any tips for finding out of print books? I have tried Google books but can only view the first 60 pages.

In reply to Doug:

You can order books through your local library, I borrowed an outrageously pricey out of print text book for £3 that way.

Tried the university catalogue but they don't stock that particular title.

Will go in on Monday with the title and ISBN and see if they can order it in from another library. I have searched the library catalogue for my local area the book is not held by any library in this area.

Update: I have also emailed the author and the publisher to see if they have any copies of the 2008 book or if I can purchase the pages I need.

As well as trying an inter-library loan via your local council library, I was going to suggest trying the British Library but their online catalogue only lists the 2013 edition. - http://catalogue.bl.uk/primo_library/libweb/action/search.do?vid=BLVU1

Many university libraries have freely available search interfaces on the web, and many are willing to offer access to members of the public. I tried Cambridge; they only have the 2013 edition. I tried the Bodleian at Oxford but their search is down. Third time lucky, Kings College London have the 2008 edition in the Maughan Library. Search here - http://www.kcl.ac.uk/library/collections/LibrarySearch2.aspx - information on public access here - http://www.kcl.ac.uk/library/visiting/joining/public.aspx

If it's for reference purposes and you know which pages you wish to access, and it's a chapter or less, you could do worse than phone them up and ask if they are able to photocopy the relevant material and post it on.

I have already tried google books. You can only view up to page 60. The information I need is after page 60, unfortunately. Cheers

Thanks for all of your help.

I have had an email back from the author who says he will check the office to see if there is a copy available. Failing that he says that if I tell him what information I need he can put together a sheet and provide me with data. Didn't expect that for service and is way more than I could of expected. Brilliant!

Thanks for your help

Abebooks is often useful.
In reply to Alan M:

Good the hear the author got in touch. For future ref I second the inter library loan system from the British Library, collected a couple of very rare but useful books I could never afford for my dissertation at that way.

This is quite a useful initial point of call:
