A more interesting story is the treatment handed out to Dr John Rae who first discovered the NW Passage and brought home news of the Franklin tragedy. Rae was castigated by Franklins wife and her socialite friends, for reporting on the cannibalism of Franklins crew and it effectively stopped him being knighted for his discoveries. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Rae_(explorer)

Thanks for the link, the expedition has always interested me since reading about in a book when I was a boy. I recommend 'Frozen In Time - The Fate of the Franklin Expedition' which covers the expedition and the discovery in the 1980s of crew members remarkably well preserved in the ice.

Cheers for this, may have missed it otherwise.

Iceblink is another account of this expedition which I enjoyed.

Add Barrow's Boys to your reading list. Very very good.

That looks good, and I've just ordered it. Thanks for tip.
