i was reminded of this comic strip by a friend's posting on the Facebook this evening:

http://calvin-and-hobbes-comic-strips.blogspot.co.uk/2011/11/calvin-asks-da...

This is possibly one of my favourite strips. I can't wait to use this on my daughter when she gets old enough to ask the question.

What's your favourite?

I completely agree, I miss Calvin & Hobbes but at the same time I hope he doesn't start doing them again.

Calvin and Hobbes was genius.

For my all time favourite it's a toss up between The Far Side and Life in Hell.

Grew up with Peanuts every sunday in the observer magazine, then as a teen bought all the books - passed on to my own kids. Didn't know at the time but 2 years ago Whwn I was visiting the people who make my instruments in Santa rosa. CA I was only a couple of miles from Charles M Schultz' house / museum. Would have loved to have visited.

Captain Hurricane.

When he got into a ragin' fury the Krauts didn't stand a chance.

And they say the Yanks helped us to win the war.....

'Bloom County' was pretty good.

And another vote for C&H, of course.

Firkin the Cat (Fiesta), Phenomenonix (Fortean Times) and Ogri (Bike) are three of my all-time favourites. Hunt Emmerson and Paul Sample are both brilliant illustrators with more than a slight nod to Robert Crumb.

Also worth a look is Chris Straub's "Broodhollow"

From 2000AD, probably Nemesis the Warlock, ABC Warriors and Strontium Dog, especially the work of artist Charles Esquerra.
Otherwise The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, and Fat Freddy's Cat were a regular read in the early 80s.

In reply to John Simpson:

Five Go Mad in Dorset, or The Strike, probably the first.
"George, you`re pretty spunky for a girl"
"Ham and turkey sandwiches, bags of lettuce, hard-boiled eggs, heaps of tomato and lashings of ginger beer".
"You shouldn't let him do that George. It's not hygienic."

You've got to admit that Randall Monroe does try to do some pretty ground breaking stuff in the medium.

Two of my favourites:

http://xkcd.com/1133/
http://xkcd.com/325/

Then there's this one:

And of course: Time youtube.com/watch?v=M5l8BhyGE68&
