Gloaming, meaning dusk and/or twilight. I think it's a beautiful word.

Lets keep using it so it doesn't fade into obscurity.

Yes, it's a lovely word. I rather like 'vespertine' - a vespertine flower opens in the evening or a vespertine creature is active at dusk. Creatures that are active at dawn and dusk are crepuscular which is another interesting word.

In guides we used to sing 'camp fire's burning' and it had a line 'in the gloaming'.
It is a nice word, you are right

Sounds like something from a Thomas Covenant book.

"Roaming in the Gloaming" Harry Lauder.
In reply to Timmd:

Crepuscular is another word that refers to this time and I first read it in a Spike Milligan book. 'Active at dawn & dusk' is a reasonable definition - cats & hamsters fit the pattern. Spike had a great grasp of language - miss him lots.

Good for naming routes finished just before dark.

I remember too, from the boy scouts:

"Campfire's burning, campfire's burning,
Draw nearer, draw nearer,
In the gloaming, in the gloaming,
We'll sing and be merry"

BBC Wiltshire did a live radio interview with me during the summer about me naming a route Ganderflanking.

Radiohead did a song of this name:

Takes a little while to get going but it's good (if you like Radiohead).

I always thought it was glowing. Makes more sense now.
