Hi,

Bit of a random one, but I'm doing a drawing project looking at prominent lines in rock...here's one i made earlier http://www.tessalyons.co.uk/masters-edge-millstone-peak-district/

As climbers we occasionally we come across routes or problems that we find aesthetically appealing in the sense that its a beautiful line and we feel compelled to climb it. Maybe I'm generalising but you get the idea of the project. I'm interested in trying to capture this on paper and I would love some suggestions of any lines that you think are particularly appealing.

I'm based near the Peak but all suggestions welcome.
Thanks,
Tessa

Getting a weird feeling after reading your post..... I dreamt last night that I was arguing with an artist friend that some lines were so beautiful that they rivalled great works of art. I showed him pics of Lotus Flower Tower to back up my assertion and he conceded the point.

Away from dream debates, I think aretes will always win.

So I nominate the beautiful and elegant Pulpit Ridge.

I've never seen that in the flesh, but ever since I saw a photo of it it's been quietly calling to me... <shudders more>

Hi Tessa , hope you're well.
I really like aretes (like your Masters edge) which there are plenty of on grit. Archangel/ The Don at Stanage is a good example. Also The Unconquerables are pretty striking features. Theres a route at Stanage Popular called Robin Hoods Right Hand Buttress Direct, its a brilliant, pure line which I always notice even when at the other side of the valley, shame about the name though.
Thats just Stanage but I'll have a think of some more

Not To Be Taken Away is the pure definition of a boulder problem that screams
CLIMB ME! as well as Careless Torque although not much use to mere mortals.

The great flake on central buttress has a strong visual and spacial aesthetic which I have always found inspiring and special. Just that pitch which I assume is ok for your criteria.

The Nose of the Fiddler is one of the most powerful lines in Britain.

Superb pic of it here by Ed Tresidder:

skeleton ridge on the chalk cliffs,
mouse trap - wavy lines,
how about some winter lines,
brimham rocks ,
not a venue for climbing but interesting, the zig zag folding in the cliffs at Millook Haven, North Cornwall.

There are some other great lines at Millstone - Great North Road, the routes to the Keyhole cave? Agree on Profit at Curbar.
