Forgive the Historical note here:
The idea of a University in Coventry had been around for a while but in the 1960's it gathered real momentum. It was felt that it should not threaten the presence of a very successful Polytechnic (Lanchester ) so should be a new establishment.
The negative impact of the industrial relations in the city's motor industry of the time suggested a break from the link to Coventry so in 1965 a new 'Warwick University' (Wholly in the City of Coventry but bordering the County) was built around the very highly regarded Westwood College of Higher Education.
It has grown in stature to be a World Class Institution but some new students are still surprised that it is not in the City of Warwick! Lanchester Poly became Coventry University in 1986 and both establishments go from strength to strength - particularly in the area of automotive manufacturing and design even though the golden age of car production in the city is over. London Taxis International are now the only volume producer of vehicles in the City of the Three Spires.
PS Warwick Uni has a great wee climbing wall.
