In Andy Kirkpatrick's article about keeping warm, one of his tips was about wearing plastic bags, next to the skin under the socks:

"and think just having a cheap thin shopping bag next to your skin, then a good sock over the top, is a no brainer on any super cold, or extended routes"

I've never heard of this before, has anyone had much success with it?
Obviously one would style it out with a waitrose or an M&S bag.....
I haven't had chance to give it a go yet but I can't help thinking it would get sweaty & horrible inside the bag.

Hi Phil, not to sure which article you are referring too, but multi-day apline routes may push you down this route so your outer socks and boot liners do not get wet if your biving.if your on a day route or the option of a tent for the night is on then maybe not required as you can dry your boot liners and socks out over night in your sleeping bag.

My own experience is of the later.
