Needs no spelling out although the drugs may be obscure for your sheltered life.

Lots of songs use "Mary Jane" as a codeword for Marijuana - the first and most obvious example being "On Ilkley Moor baht'at".

Jefferson airplane' s 'white rabbit' is a classic as is The Shamen' s 'Ebeneezer Goode'. And then there's also 'Lucy in the sky with diamonds'.
In reply to The lemming:

Just say no by Zammo is probably the most famous song ever written about drugs. Also, it's pretty obscure and tenuous but White Lines (don't do it) by Melle Mel was reputed to have references to cocaine. I still struggle to see it

In reply to The Lemming:

"I'm waiting for the man" (Velvet Underground) is about buying heroin.

Heroin (also Velvet Underground) is about, erm, heroin

Golden Brown (Stranglers) is also about heroin.

Ther she goes (The La's) is also about heroin.
In reply to Mike Peacock:

Alas I only have the digital version nowadays.
Really must listen to it again soon sometime .

Spacemen 3 - Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To
Absolutely loads of hip hop and reggae, eg Peter Tosh - Legalize It, John Holt - Police In Helicopter, Cypress Hill - Hits From The Bong, Biggie - Ten Crack Commandments, Dillinger - Cocaine In My Brain, Wayne Smith - Under Me Sleng Teng
All Velvet Underground tunes that aren't about S&M
Queens of the Stone Age - Feel Good Hit of the Summer
Johnny Thunders - Chinese Rocks

Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Under the Bridge is a heroin song.

It is very more-ish.
In reply to The Lemming: Lindisfarne's 'Meet me on the corner' is about buying drugs.

In reply to The Lemming:

Surprised no one has yet mentioned Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll by Ian Dury.
 tony 07 Jan 2015
In reply to MGC:

They're just the first ones that came to mind. Also to be mention, The needle and the damage done, by Neil Young. There's a whole Wikipedia category for songs about drugs.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Songs_about_drugs
In reply to The Lemming: Caravan's 'I wish I were stoned' is fairly obvious. 'Love is the drug' by Roxy Music is about love being not just a drug but *the* drug. Motorhead, by Motorhead, is about speed.

In reply to The Lemming: Guess what J J Cale's song 'Cocaine' is about...?

I thought he always denied Perfect Day was about Heroin... which given he was open about other references seems legit.

A shorter list might be songs which aren't about drugs

REALLY? never heard of it. And surely - Clapton/Cream/various - 'Cocaine'

and 'Sex & Drugs & Rock and Roll' a

and HUNDREDS of songs are better known that that! I can't imagine you could walk down the street asking random people if they'd heard of Zammo and get many responses, but Led Zepellin, Oasis, G'n'R, etc etc they would!

As Durbs has said it is probably easier to list the ones that aren't.

Really? Maybe you're listening to the wrong track as I would say its blindly obvious!

In reply to Scarab9:

Don't worry, my whole post was a p1ss take

But I do like the idea of asking random people if they have heard of Zammo. As a child of the 70's and 80's Grange Hill was essential viewing...although Zammos era did have Rolaaand (what an actor Ekran Mustafa was), it was not as good as Tucker Jenkins and Trisha Herbert era. Everyone I know of a similar age would know who Zammo was...if they haven't smoked too much weed between then and now

Cocaine was originally a JJ Cale song.

I have heard some people say that The Beatles "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is code for LSD.

Brown Sugar by the Stones is surely another one?

How about I Take Drugs by the Murderdolls. pretty subliminal lyrics...

[Chorus]
I take drugs
I take drugs
I take drugs and you should too
[repeat]

Every day in every way
I'm looking for a fix to make me feel okay
I need something to give me hope
Like an automatic weapon or an eight ball of coke

[Chorus]

I'm stressin' out I need it now
I need some f*cking pills to bring me down
What's the crime if I snort a line
Toke, choke shoot it up all at the same time

[Chorus]

I need the drugs and they need me
Drug use is the only use for me
Just say no but I'm always sayin' yes
To the D are you G S

[Chorus]

The album 'Ray of Light' by Madonna said to be about experiences on ketamine and which she said would sound great on drugs.

'Lets all go to a ketamine Party' by Flannel. (Played by the BBC as part of a fundraiser for Children in Need.)

There's also an artist called: Keta Minh.

There are of course entire genres of music inspired by drugs like psychedelic trance, acid house, acid techno, most modern dance music in fact.

No-one so far has mentioned a much earlier example of drugs and music - The "Coffee Cantata" by J S Bach - the text is about the older generation disapproving of this dodgy new drug that youngsters are becoming addicted to.

And I vaguely recollect there is an even earlier song (Purcell, I think) entitled something like "Tobacco's but an Indian weed".
