Wiring batteries - Silly question

Right, i got to wire 5 AA batteries in series to make a battery pack and couldn't find tabbed batteries, so i simply got a length of cable and stripped it at interval to make contact with the batteries tips.

Now, knowledge tells me this is ok, my brain tells me this is fine, but i have this feeling that it's not and that i'm about to ruin 30 quid worth of batteries.

Can anyone with electrical knowledge confirm i'm being a wuss and an idiot and that i should just get on with it?

The setup is like so http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd137/senorlopez13/DSC_0195_zps9c76c35a....

That's parallel, not series......

Igonre that, you have them inverted, cant really see properly, where is the other wire ?

What is your end goal ?

Actually, I think it's neither parallel nor series, but (depending what you do at the other end) nothing at all or a bunch of short circuits. So you might be about to ruin them :-S

Also, I don't know how you are planning to connect the wire to the batteries. Soldering might not be a good idea, if that is your plan.

Depends what's going on on the other end of them !!

OP, read up here before you spit alkaline shards over your kitchen......

To my eye that looks almost certainly wrong. Buy a battery holder off of ebay!
In reply to Mr Lopez:
That is wronger than a very wrong thing. You want to take that apart quick.

5 batteries in series will get you 5 x 1.5V = 7.5V with Alkaline cells. If you draw a battery as (- +) it should go
(- +) link (- +) link ( - +) link (- +) link (- +) so each of the links in the middle touches only two batteries.

Uh, oh. Nail nearly on the head. I had them stacked up/down but was going to wire them in a parallel fashion! Thanks

In reply to Mr Lopez:

Parallel just like connect all - and + presume you are going to longer burn time at 1.5V ?

Ha. loads of replies in the time it took me to write that. Cheers guys, my 6th sense and your replies saved the day.

Lesson learnt, don't DIY after 2 beers...

In reply to Dark-Cloud:

No, i need them in series to get 18v out of 5x3.6v

Damn, and you edited your post, so now it looks like i'm talking nonsense

In reply to Mr Lopez:

Can't tell until we see the other end but it looks like a few short circuits.

Why don't you buy a 6 cell pack and solder up one of them. That way you don't ruin 30 quid worth of batteries.

18v out of 5x3.6v? You would need 12 x 1.5v AA batteries in series. If you're using 1.8v AA batteries (do they exist) then 10 in series.

Ah you must be using some fancy lithium batteries or something. Yeh, get a battery holder. Job done for about £1.50

Because that won't fit in the casing the batteries go in. Not too worry, everything under control now. Just had a brain fart when stripping the little bits of wire to do it the 'normal' way and somehow thought it'd be easier to use a single length, completely missing the fact that they don't actually go the full stack.

Cheers though

Had a look on Amazon after cpc and rs. For 1.14 I would give it a try.
