It is not "picky" to ask up or across. If you allow across the longest route will be one of the girdles. It you don't it will be a much shorter up route.

If you want to be picky, we'd normally say highest.

Strange how we use the different adjectives - highest cliff, longest route. If we swap them over the meaning subtly changes. Longest cliff could/would probably mean measured horizontally as you suggested above. Highest route could easily refer to a short pitch at a very high altitude.
