Thinking about getting a bouldering mat, does anybody have any experience of these two mats?
http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/metolius-session-crash-pad-p297745
Or
http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/climb-x-double-x-boulder-mat-p194188

Does the metolios justify the extra cost or is the extra thickness of the climb x significant?

Are there any other mats around this price point to look at?

Cheers

I love the climbx mats. I've used a fair few different mats and found those to be by far the best. They don't have specific storage pockets but the straps are pretty good so you can still carry stuff in between and the extra thickness is noticeable on bigger falls.

It's a better pad than either of the above and you're supporting British manufacturing

So much choice, can a bouldering mat be bad? I just like the colour of the alpkit ones

Yep, there's some really crap pads on the market from some big brands you'd expect better from.

The metolious is pretty soft or gets pretty spongy pretty quick.

I'd recommend DMM highball or the taco equivalent or a moon warrior. Both have a good dense top layer of foam which you want for spreading the impact of a fall.

I wouldnt want to fall from height onto the metolious.

Just my 2 cents

I agree with GPN https://www.alpkit.com/products/mujo is a great pad!

Anybody know what the usual Alpkit delivery time is? I received "your item has been dispatched e-mail" on 17th. I have no idea how long delivery should take and can't find anything on the website.

I know it's a bit late but I picked up the Session for a decent price (£108) through Go Outdoor's price match as my first mat. It hasn't been used in anger yet because of the weather and work but first impressions (from a few breakfalls on it) are that it's canny for the price. The straps are a bit of a faff to remove to stop them getting hacky with the fitting being velcro but I'd sooner get a bit hacky than do myself in.

hi chaps,

my 2 cents but I wouldnt by a pad without a wedge cut at the least, I've seen 2 mates go through the hinge and break something, one their ankle and the other (quite spectacularaly from 3 feet off the deck) their tibia and fibia

its only my opinion and I know loads of people who have had straight hinged mats for years and been absolutely fine...

In reply to robal:

I don't have a mat and don't intend to buy one, but out of interest what to you mean by wedge?
OP chrisa87 19 Feb 2015
In reply to Timarzi:

It's how the mat folds together when using a hinged mat. Most use a straight cut through the mat where they place the hinge, some others use a bevel-like cut through the centre which is meant to stop you going straight through the mat and having the mat fold around your legs

In reply to Timarzi:

hi, Chris87 said it exactly, the wedge can be seen on:

http://www.needlesports.com/Catalogue/Rock-Climbing-Equipment/Crash-Mats/St...

by comparison with:

https://www.alpkit.com/products/mujo

its only a small difference and 99.9% of the time it wouldn't have any effect at all, however having seen it happen twice it kinda put me off my straight cut mats.

I do have alpkit mats and they are fab in all other aspects!

Ah, a wonky bend. If I ever have to buy my own I know now. It seems sensible.

Ta!

We've had a whole load of Alpkit mats and they have always performed well...and the casings and foam have held out for a long time.

I never managed to never fall through the hinge on a mat....and never seen it happen. So I guess that means my next trip out is officially cursed...

I own alpkit and haven't fallen through the hinge once! Mujo rules for the best part!
