How would you describe the difference between soul and R&B?

Nope, there is a distinct difference between Rhythm and Blues and R&B, both of which in their place are a pleasure to listen to. However there would appear to be blurred lines between soul and R&B of 20 years ago and further back.

The modern R&B is just shameful, to my ears. And is more blurred with rap than anything else I can think of.

My girlfriend asked me the soul/rhythm &blues question a wee while ago. I dobr recall coming up with an answer that satisfied either of us!

I'm trying to define my music collection and different web sites give different genres for some artists.
