Well that doesn't do it for me at all.

How about this?

In reply to Denni:

oh dear no, thats just not right. for me it misses the sheer threat and menace of g'n'r.

when it comes to covers, johnny cash is hard to beat

for a change, instead of 'hurt', here's his take on U2s 'one'. he's quite possibly the only person who could cover this song

Never knew they covered Born to Run.

If we're talking Springsteen covers , Amy Macdonald does a nice "Dancing in the Dark".

Acoustic Michael Jackson cover: youtube.com/watch?v=DQ_iwWFvRP0&
Very acoustic Leonard Cohen cover: youtube.com/watch?v=GrZx1ifOz6g&

Such a pity these two aren't together any more.

Ever heard the Faith Healers cover of Abba's SOS?
Brilliant.

Gimme Gimme - yngwie malmsteen cover of abba
Comfortably numb - scissor sisters cover of pink floyd
In reply to Denni:
I think there are covers & re-interpretations of songs and I definitely prefer the latter. I'm sure lots will come to me later but for now I do recall Cowboy Junkies doing superb reworks of 'Blue Moon', ' Sweet Jane' & best of all 'Powderfinger'. Ok so the style of rework is similar but the tune is totally transformed by the band and that seems to me to justify the effort.

British Sea Power did this with 'I am a cider drinker', turning something daft into something wonderful. And daft.

In reply to Denni: faith no more did a great cover of the Black Sabbath classic, War Pigs.

Gregor, I don't know about that, Mary J Blige does a good cover?
Do not take this as criticism of Johnny Cash, I'm not going to slag off a fellow Fifer.

In reply to drmarten:
No, too much leather-lunged vocal gymnastics for my liking...

I feel she misreads the emotion of the song. It's not an affirmational anthem, its about the irretrievable disintegration of a long term relationship. Cash conveys the sense of loss and emotional damage perfectly; Blige seems to me to be on a mission to see how loud she can sing the chorus....

Still, its not as bad as Whitney Houston shouting 'I will always love you'....

Cheers
Gregor

Actually while I don't mind her vocal gymnastics I think you're right. I can't believe she doesn't understand the lyric but for some reason she has decided to perform it in the way you describe.

From the sublime to the sublime - the late Lux Interior with the Cramps covering Johnny Burnette's rockabilly classic 'Tear It Up'.

That is what you call a performance.
