Haven't been to Auchinstarry since the council "improvements" and wondering what the easy car park access climbs are like - and are there belays at the top - taking a 7 and a 5 year old for their first rock outing, either there to Neilston so any advice / opinion on Starry?

I think Neilston would be a better call as there are some easier climbs and the stakes are reasonably good. In Auchinstarry, there are three bolts next to Promontory Direct (probably too difficult for kids?) but there is a fence on the LHS and couple of trees to climb slabs.

Access climbs are still intact complete with stakes and trees for simple rigging. Perfect for kids.

Think Starry would be fine. The rigging between Access Route and Slinky Lizard is a tree further back from the old stakes, so worth bringing a rigging rope you don't mind getting a bit dirty. Not a lot of loose rock, Access Route is actually a bit looser than before, but it's settled down a bit now.

Had fun this morning at Starry, no stakes for belays (although holes left in ground to show where they had been) but belay off the trees further back - think Neilston may have been the quieter option though
