Is this in situ top rope extender safe?

So I popped down to my local minor crag, Kemple End. There are in situ belay stakes and rope extenders for easy top rope setting. They are running through some undergrowth and are generally a bit green. Would you use these?

No.

Cut up some rope and replace em yourself. It's all for the greater good.

In reality they are probably fine but to be on the safe side just replace them.

Echo above. Definite no. As someone else said, cut up some rope and replace them.
In reply to radddogg:

And if you do replace it, please actually replace. Don't just add more and leave that there as well.

I wouldn't even bother replacing them. Let people rig up their own systems for their own visit and take that away on finishing for the day.

It is as safe as this carabiner: http://i.imgur.com/qbg5CpJ.jpg

Really, get some thick cord from your climbing wall store and replace it.

I think that by asking the question you have answered your own question. I reckon that if you find yourself in the position where you ever feel the need to ask someone else if you should use in situ gear then the answer is always no. If there is even the smallest doubt in your mind then don't use it - or back it up with something bombproof.

I definitely wouldn't use them.

Yeah I hadn't planned on using them really, it was more out of interest really. I know rope takes a lot of punishment but looks like that may have taken some biological damage.

I recognise that rope as John Proud's current climbing rope it started as an 50metre, 11mm (30 years ago). He'll be back for it soon as he'll need it for his next project. John's the crag moderator.
